Getting There

Bauneg Beg Conservation Area in North Berwick includes 89 acres of deciduous forest land surrounding the 866-foot, three-peaked Bauneg Beg Mountain. The land was acquired by Great Works Regional Land Trust in three parts over the course of seven months in 2000 and 2001. The 0.65-mile trail winds through a deciduous forest, a pine grove and a section of large boulders described as "Devil's Den" before reaching the highest of the three peaks. Trail forks just before the summit with a choice of routes to the top. Easier trail veers to the right. Rocky outcroppings offer views of nearby Mount Hope, parts of south Sanford and, according to Great Works Regional Land Trust, on a clear day, Mount Washington to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast.

There is a small Parking lot and no Facilities.

The main trail begins at a parking area and kiosk on Fox Farm Hill Road between Ford Quint and Hammond roads in North Berwick. (See Map.)

Nice view of mt Washington at the top, not much else to see elsewhere as far as views go, but a nice trail nonetheless. Got to practice using ice grippers for the first time, not that they were absolutely necessary, but what a difference they make!

VERY ICY... wear spikes right now!! Also came across a large cat (bigger than my lab) in its den at the Ginny/Linny point at the base of the rock ledge. Maybe 40 yards off trail so use caution. Or if you are up on the ledge you are practically on top of it! Great hike and fantastic views!

Nice short hike. We stayed to the left and went up Ginny’s way, headed to Bauneg Beg Hill Road and back up, down Linny’s way, and then went to other peak.

Nice little hike. A lot of elevation gain early on and then it’s relatively flat. Pretty packed down and slippery in some places today. Views were ok at the top.

Super quick hike. Was hoping for a little more of a challenge, but it was still peaceful. No need for micro spikes as recent snow wasn’t packed down much. Well marked. Definitely dog and kid-friendly.

Busy early today. Steep climb to best view and that part of the trail not marked that well.

Love this little hike. Beautiful sunny day with clear skies. Because it’s winter hiking and the trails being used a lot, beware: icy conditions. I recommend micro-spikes, or some kind of cleats. Parking lot is also very icy. That being said, its still a great little mountain to explore. “Get outdoors “ 1/12/2021

HikingGreat!Snow

So pretty in the snow. Easy-to-follow trail through dense pine on the lower slopes with almost total canopy cover—gets kinda spooky close to sunset, and quick hike up to more spaced out spruce/hemlock. 30 mins if you’re faster, but I’m a meanderer. Couldn’t tell if the first small rock “summit” had a view because it was foggy. A refreshing hike.

HikingGreat!

Just did this this morning with my 7 year old son and 8 month old German Shepherd. Trail was pretty easy with a few steep spots. Watch your footing as it's covered in leaves and there were a few slick areas. Decent views at the top. Enough space to distance from others. Fun outing enjoyed by all!

Great kid and dog friendly hike. Our 5 yr old and 9 yrd old both enjoyed it. Small but nicely maintained and uncrowded parking area at 1pm on a week day. Only saw a couple other hikers the whole way and heard the hunters (or perhaps the Rod & Gun Club?) off in the distance. Other than that, it was just us on the trail. Took a little more than an hour round trip with several stops for kids to explore. There’s a few steep grades and an option to take a more or less rocky path to the top. Top has smaller open summit but really great views! Happy hiking!

This is a gem. Beautiful woods, winding, well-marked trails, varied and interesting terrain, and a good view from NW to E at the top. No steep grades, so good for late fall leaf-covered hike, especially with my older dog. I look forward to returning to see what it's like in other seasons!

Great little hike. We finished in much shorter time than we anticipated. Beautiful area. Kids loved it! Especially Devil’s Den!
