Trail is open again after storms. The Forest Service and volunteers have done a great job clearing monumental damage. The creek is still clear and beautiful. Low points are very muddy, even several days after the last rain, but navigable. We are glad to have it open again.
Trail was very good. Majority was very clear and easily traveled. Came to a spot right before Kincaid that was tough to get through.
Very fun trail for hiking and trail running. I've done it twice already. My GPS measured it at just shy of 16 miles. Fairly wide at most points so they spider webs are kept to a minimum and you are almost always by a body of water so it's cool and relaxing. Halfway mark goes through the recreational area so you can take a break by the lake if you want. Just watch out for boar. I saw about 25 last trip
Very runnable and very well marked. Rooty but Not terribly technical. Nice wide trails and well maintained. I followed only yellow blazes for 4.75 miles out and back. I wanted to keep going but was limited on time. Not too much elevation on my route, although hilly enough to slow you down a bit. Loved it and will be back!!
Great day. Trail conditions were good. Campground closed because of government shutdown.
Good trail here. I'm not sure why this is rated easy when 9 miles of the trail is Kincaid Loop which is rated moderate. The correct path is Wild Azalea -> Lamotte Trail -> Kincaid Loop. I'm not sure what Lamotte is rated but I would guess it's probably moderate. All in all, you complete Lamotte Trail (twice) and fully complete Kincaid Loop. Kincaid Loop is where it got tough for us. We did 10 miles one day, camped, and then hiked out the next day. Good test for myself and my brother, both beginner hikers.
Fun little creek at .8 mi. Took my dogs on a very short outing.
Would define this as the Azalea (white blaze) to Lamotte Creek (yellow blaze) to Kincaid Loop (blue blaze). Not sure why my recording is 17.1 and trail description says 14.7. Overcast day with temps in low 80s. Jogged portions of it especially during drops in elevation and flat places. No bugs, just broke a few spider webs. Feet stayed dry, but bridges and overpasses were slick. Trail in good condition, only a few spots with grasses rubbing the ankles so shorts were no problem and there were a handful of fallen trees. Only other person on trail was a Mtn biker and he was very kind letting us know he was coming behind. Saw deer tracks but limited wildlife. Did see Beaty Berries and Coral Beans. Azalea offers the greatest depth and beauty, followed by Lamotte and then Kincaid. Make sure to take the right when you see the Lamotte (yellow) and then a right onto Kincaid, but don't cross to Lakeshore. Stay left. Water was available from a faucet near lake beach around mile 7. Bathrooms and shower were closed but a second one just past beach was there but we didn't check it. I would do this hike again. It's long and we did it in a day. Many campsites and access to water in streams in the Lamotte portion. Rolling hills keep this interesting and not very technical, but stumps in Lamotte can make one trip if you aren't paying attention. Truly an amazing space and worth the drive from New Orleans for a change of scenery and the fresh smell of pine.
It took us 2 miles more to do which was rough, but was overall great. Would suggest only doingKincaid loop which is 10 miles though
Fantastic trail with great views. Good for backpacking and camping off on your own, or day hiking. Lots of elevation changes, but not too tough. You share the trail with mountain bikers, but I haven't had any problems with it. I simply step aside. Very peaceful in the off season (Jan, Feb) I've not gone any other time.
Did it one day. Nice hike with a lot of changes in elevation. Kinda a rollercoaster. Also a ton of blind curves and short sight lines. Hikers stay alert. I had 6 mountain bikes come up on me really fast. Would not recommend earphones. Bikers, put a bell or something that makes noise on your bikes, please.
The beginning of the trail was not well marked. However, the rest of the trail was well marked and easily followed. The trail goes around Kinkaid Lake with very nice views of the Lake. Part of the trail passes through a camping area that is available on the Lake. The camping area is pleasant and comfortable. The trail also can connect to the rest of the Wild Azalea Trail for a longer hike if desired.
