Getting There

Alpine Loop Trail #520 is located in Pulaski County on Stearns District of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The trail leaves from The Alpine Picnic Area, which is right off US 27. The trail traverses a dirt pathway to the northwest before intersecting a dirt road. There the trail turns more westerly down the old roadway to the old railroad grade. The trail then meanders along the old railroad grade southeast for .25 miles to Forest Road #5088, where it turns northeast along the road back, returning to the beginning of the trail. Alpine Spur Trail #520A is a short 1/4 mile trail and an easy walk for most, with a variety of things to see and hear. The trail begins off of Alpine Loop Trail #520 and continues around the hilltop to the old road, where it will take you back to the Alpine Picnic Area.

Restroom is available at the Alpine Picnic area.

Take US 27 north from Whitley City for 11.1 miles. From Burnside, take US 27 south for seven miles. Look for signs.

Nice little walking trail. Mosquitoes and chiggers were CRAZY bad though. Got ate up. Recommend only walking this trail in the late fall-early winter. When the bugs go back to hell where they belong Lol.

Wear insect repellent this time of year! I picked 27 ticks off myself throughout this hike. Lots of poison ivy on and alongside the trail. The variety of birds and their songs were wonderful!

Easy loop trail. Took the trail up to the Alpine cemetery. That trail is uphill and will definitely work your leg muscles. Discovered an insect we’ve never seen before.

I liked this trail. Nice easy loop. But going up to the Old Alpine Graveyard made the hike. Also it had rained heavy for two days so some of the trail was muddy and flooded. But overall a nice trail. With a couple small caves and tunnels and small waterfalls to check out.

a few down trees but overall a good hike. I could see why this trail may get lower ratings during the warm months but luckily we had no troubles with high weeds. came across a couple cool rock formations and checked out the alpine cemetery (had to go off trail to see.) a couple hills but nothing strenuous.

Tree tops blocking the path and trail not open year round. Great hiking experience other than the aggravation.

This was a terrible trail. We had the hardest time finding/staying on the trail. It was overgrown and part of it was closed so we had to backtrack instead of loop it.

A pleasant walk, still wet and muddy in the low areas.

What a perfect trail for families with kids or older adults! Plenty of rocky spots and mini caves for our preteens to climb while waiting for the little ones to catch up. Lots of areas with gently flowing water, so pack a change of shoes for everyone. We found unusual mushrooms and cool small creatures.

There are some really interesting spots on this trail. There are some overgrown spots. Be prepared for ticks and spiders!

Got all the way there to find out that it is indeed not accessible year round. Went 2/21/18 and the gates were closed.

There is a lot to see on this short loop. Features include old mine shafts, caves, a pond, and a cemetery. The beginning of the trail is a bit overgrown but it gets better as you get close to the old logging road. There were traces of bears on the trail and that is something that you may want to be aware of. The trail is well marked and easy to hike.
