I day hiked from the northern terminus to Big Perry Road just north of I-64. A nice ridge walk for most of the trail. A few camp sites along the way but none with water except the one by the water pump along Dry Branch about 10 miles in. There is a cool but rickety swing bridge over the Holly Fork around mile 12.

Hiked trail 12/29 thru 12/31. Trail was in good shape -- a few downed trees here and there but nothing too hindering. Our first day on the trail it rained all day and almost all night so water was plentiful in the many "ponds" along the trail. However, no promises on water being that abundant during drier times. About 10 miles in from the northern terminus, there is a small park with creek, water spigot, fire pit, picnic covering that backpackers can use. We wish we had known that before sleeping out in Hurricane Katrina the night before. Scenery met expectations. Beautiful woods and hills and creeks but not much of a wow factor.

Backpacking

This was my first backpacking trip and we didn't get a chance to complete it due to the high temperature and lack of water sources on the second day (creeks were all dry). Would probably have been fine in cooler weather.

Well marked trail mostly along the ridgeline with a beautiful valley section along some streams around 10 miles in. Water and camping spots are tough to find, so bring plenty of water and fill up when you can. There is a water pump about 10 miles in. This trail is very doable in two days / one night with gear.

Great trail, up hill at both ends but follows the ridge all the way between northern terminus and the start section 2. Nice pick nick area at beginning of section 2.

section 1 was a 10 mile hike up and down, and up and down. For your middle aged once a month hiker it was a tough days walk. There is limited water on section 1plan accordingly. Sections 2 and 3 combine for another 6 miles. They take you through a valley along a creek and over a rope bridge. The challenge is near the end, a very steep climb out of the valley. Scenery is beautiful.
