Paw Paw and Chinkapin Trail Loop is a 4.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Mount Washington, Kentucky that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Nicely constructed trail, but it was muddier than I expected since it hasn't rained lately and temps have been below freezing. the trail is pretty flat and there is quite a bit of walking on pavement. it was perfectly fine for a quick trail on a sunny day.
Really amazing and well maintained trail, pretty easy terrain, proper mile markers, heavily trafficked.. At this time all the water was pretty much dried up.. Enjoyed it thoroughly!!
This was my favorite hike so far and the chicapin was a fun trail with less traffic than the pawpaw. There were only a handful of bikers and a couple of hikers. There are lots of flowers along the trail as well as several deer.
lovely trail. but gets slippery in rain. love the trees. excellent for dogs.
Has moderate elevation changes and a few muddy spots even though it hasn't rained recently. Pretty busy with bikers. The trail is well maintained, as they generally are in the Parklands.
My wife and I have ridden this trail several times recently. I would rate it as easy/moderate as there is nothing that requires expert MTB skills to get through. The up hills are easy enough to climb and the downhills provide nice runs. These trails stay wet and it takes several dry days before the trails themselves dry out. The are definitely the best when fully dry.
Took my daughter (11) and road Paw Paw over to the bike park from the Sky Meadow trail entrance. We absolutely loved the quality of the trails, the berms, jumps, and terrain variation. Really great ride with moderate elevation changes, switchbacks, and some creeks to cross. The roots were prominent in some places but not overwhelming. It does make a big difference to ride this trail with full suspension vs. hard tail. I’ve done it with both and was a little sore after the dads tail ride. These trails need a full two days without rain before they can be ridden with out causing erosion.
Pretty nice trail. The highlight is definitely the limestone shelf creek that intersects the the trail several times. Be ready to walk through shallow water. This seems to be a favorite of mountain bikers so be ready to share the tail an for lots of muddy rutts. Next time I’ll stay right on Paw Paw and pick up Chickipin to get to the creek quicker.
This is an excellent trail if you have a couple of hours to hike. Very flat with only a couple spots of very moderate elevation change. Several great creek crossings that add some interest with out the need to get your shoes wet. Take the dog out and have a great hike.
This trail was great for a short hike with the dogs. There was a couple water crossings but they were quite shallow. The dogs loved walking through them and barking at the deer we saw.
This trail is rated “moderate,” but would be considered easy for an experienced hiker. No significant climbs/descents with well kept trails. This site says 4.9 miles, but from the parking lot to the beginning of Paw Paw then to Chinkapin and back my distance was recorded more like 6 miles. Lots of bikers to dodge.
Very nice, lots of twists and tiny hills. I can see why it is a favorite for bikers. Unfortunately, there are no views. otherwise a well maintained trail!
