Center Furnace Trail is a 0.3 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Cadiz, Kentucky that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
There’s not much of a hike here; this loop mostly about the history surrounding the Hematite, Kentucky iron furnace that was founded on this site in 1852 and continued to operate until 1917. In addition to the brick ruins of the iron furnace’s stack, there is a replica of the rustic charcoal hearth that produced the fuel to fire the furnace. Apparently these types of hearths were common through Land Between the Lakes in the mid-1800’s (and greatly damaged the soil). Not far from the site of the General Store, there is a giant 150-year-old white oak (called the “Wolf Tree”) that was 20 years old when the town of Hematite was founded. Unless you’re a history buff, there is not much of a hike here. If that’s your thing, this loop should be suitable for people of all ages and fitness labels. This trail is acceptable for those with moderate accessibility concerns.
Very educational. Highly suggest starting the loop by walking to the right first and looping around.
