Loop trail the follows Cave Run Lake before turning inward and connecting into the Sheltowee Trace trail. Following the Sheltowee Trace will return you back to your starting point at Stoney Cove. Caney Run starts at the Stoney Cove Recreation Area. This path curves and winds along the shores of Cave Run Lake, offering extensive lake views before it turns up the Caney Creek embayment, where more views await. From here, it rejoins the Sheltowee Trace and winds over low hills that stand between quiet creeks and returns to Stoney Cove.

Holy smokes, is this trail muddy. Make sure you're wearing waterproof boots or shoes with a lot of traction! secluded lake views make it very worth your while though:)

If you do this trail without already hating horses, that will likely change. Good views, mixed terrain, not too difficult, horses suck. Some horse people leave trash and suck too.

Pretty nice trail, multiple options. The big draw is the lake. You can sit on the dock and just relax, very peaceful lake. There’s also other hiking options nearby, a nice place to spend a day.

Great trail, have done it when the horses are out, much better when the horses are banned for the season in my opinion. Several camp sites along the way, a lot of muddy spots, one tree down. Wear good shoes and you’ll have a great time, good views year round.

Note: This trail is 10.0 miles long, not the 8+ as given above. Also, they are in the process of re-blazing this trail. Formerly the back side (the part of the trail further away from the lake) was the Sheltowee Trace. Now, the part of the trail that runs along the lake is the Sheltowee Trace and has recently been re-blazed to reflect that. It is now very well marked. I camped at about the 5 1/2 mile point traveling anti-clockwise. The trail itself was kind of soggy and was slow going as I was in my summer hiking shoes, so had to carefully pick my path to avoid getting wet feet. It is a mixed use trail but horses aren't allowed in the winter, so it isn't quite quicksand.

Just hiked 2.5 in and a quick 2.5 out. Lovely trail. Muddy a day after rain mixed with horse tracks but overall a fun time!

Super muddy, but no issue with proper shoes. There is an unmarked fork in the trail after you make the turn to stay on the loop or continue to the horse camp, just stay with the sheltowee signs there.

Great trail run! Definitely one you'd want to do after a drought though.

Probably the worst trail I’ve been on (out of 50+). I prob burned 1000 calories constantly smacking away gnats and spider webs. 1st and last mile were ok My Garmin said 9.5 total miles. The rest of the trail there were constant gnats and running into spider webs. It was muddy in many areas. The horses have torn up those spots. There’s views of the lake- prob better when leaves fall.

Very pretty and peaceful. Nothing spectacular, but that’s what I look for sometimes.

A fairly easy hike, but was quite muddy due to recent heavy rains. There was not much scenic views, just the woods. I would do the trail again.
