The 51-mile Prairie Spirit Trail is a rail to trail multi-use trail that passes through rural Kansas communities. Beginning from north at Ottawa, Kansas., or from the south at Iola, Kansas. There are three other trail heads in between these two cities. The 51-mile multi-purpose path is a twelve-foot wide trail surface consisting of compacted crushed limestone, which makes an excellent surface for bicycles, walking, and wheelchairs. It is built upon a former railway bed, the trail grades are very moderate and most stretches are level making this trail ideal for maintaining steady speeds on long rides. The trail passes over several bridges overlooking ponds, creeks, and the Marais Des Cygne River. Trailheads providing amenities such as restrooms and picnic areas are located in each community along the trail, while rest areas with bench seating are strategically placed along the trail.
Why does this app only show this trail in Ottawa? This trail extends all the way from Iola, KS, through Garnett, Welda, Scipio, Richmond, and finally to Ottawa. Not an. Accurate depiction at all.
I havnt completed this trail, and currently I've only biked on trails around my hometown of Kansas City, but this is one of my favorite trails. Great ride, great scenery highly recommended. The museum at the Ottawa trailhead is pretty neat, but if you want to detour a couple miles if 'city' miles, starting at the Princeton trailhead is suggested.
Spirit trail is a great rail to trail project. Well maintained. Great ride. I took it from Ottawa to Iola. better scenery than I expected. Trail side amenities are a little scarce so plan water and meals accordingly.
