Well maintained and marked, but a few trees are down due to the recent insane wind. Lots of leaves right now, so I would recommend poles or a walking stick because they hide a lot of obstacles. All in all, this is a fun trail.

Parked at the Slough creek boat ramp. Ran through mile 27 and 28. The trail is actually 29 miles total.

We took the East leg of the trail. It was very overgrown and the ticks where extreme! The terrain itself was very nice. Next time I think we'll try the other direction, hopefully it'll be be better maintained.

Nice rustic trail with many rocks and rough terrain. Be sure to be prepared with good shoes & long pants. Beautiful for the fall! Many inclines to get your blood flowing and your heart beating. Single lane trail.

If you walk this entire trail loop at Perry Lake it is definitely a challenge. In fact that's what we called it when we hiked it... The Perry Lake Challenge Hike. The 'we' was the Kansas City Adventure Club, and the challenge was to do it in one shot, not split it up. We made the hike on 4-6-13. One hiker had a GPS and the final tally was 29.42 miles. We started at 8:30 am, after pitching our tents, and ended between 7:30-7:45 pm. The Old Military section is definitely the most technical and difficult section of the trail and there are several stretches where the lake is visible with some really good vistas. Best lake scenery is to start down on the South end at Slough Creek and head North, keeping to the left or West when the trail forks. It's about 6 miles up to the first break point, with tables and parking (if you have support vehicles). The next 8.5 miles is the Old Military section - LOTS of hills and back in the trees going away from the lake at the end. The next 3.5 miles is also wooded and hilley and takes you to the farthest point North ending at a gravel road. The next 4 miles is pretty much all gravel road and the least scenic and toughest part of the loop in terms of poor footing... it's no fun to walk 4 miles on gravel, trust me. The last 7.5 miles is gently rolling hills and flat sections, with several field crossings included. The lake comes back into view for the a few miles of it and it is one of the easier sections of the loop. Broken up into two hikes it would be a little more fun and a little less challenging. I would rate it as 4-4.5 stars. If the gravel road was out and you saw the lake more often it would definitely be a 5. Enjoy
