Getting There

This highpoint has an unobstructed view in all directions and can be a bit windy although you'll never know you are standing on anything but a big flat field. Kansas is known as the Sunflower State and locals have made sure the highpoint looks like one. Take some time to hang out and sign the register and look at what others have written. Total time from the state capital is around 6 hours with a distance of 360 miles. After the long drive you will be standing at 4,039 feet, the highpoint of Kansas, staring at a giant metal sunflower.

Directions from the State Capital of Topeka, KS: This "summit" is 38 miles off of I-70 so it can be a quick grab if you are traveling cross-country. Head west on I-70 from the intersection of I-70 and I-470 just west of Downtown Topeka, KS. Follow this for nearly 280 miles to exit 76. Take this exit and turn left onto US-40 heading west towards Sheron Springs for 67 miles. Turn right at Rd Wa-N6 and go just a short distance to turn left onto Wa w-M for another 2 miles. These road names are tough so make sure to use the track in this guide. After 2 miles turn right at Wa N-4 and head north for another mile before turning left on Wa w-N. Go another mile and turn on the final road, Wa-N3 and go north 9.5 miles until you see signs for Mt. Sunflower. Park at the base of the hill and walk about a half mile to the highpoint where there is a summit register.

My kids and I took a road trip specifically to nab the highpoints of Nebraska and Kansas. One of the more underwhelming highpoints, but the views of the wide-open plains were pretty impressive in their own right. Happy Mother's Day to me!

This is really a drive-up high point, but we chose to walk halfway up the 'driveway' to get there. The Kansas scenery did not disappoint and our traveling companions made the journey in the car so much more enjoyable. It was great to mark #5of50 off the list!

So it's literally a .3 mile walk up a road to the high point in Kansas. A very unique summit on private land with a free little library, signs, and picnic table. I raced the sunset up there and was amazed with it's beauty. Glad I did it.

Just fun to say you did Kansas High point. Nice prairie views. A couple of nice metal artwork. Did it to break up the drive through Kansas.
