Great concrete trail with awesome views. A challenging start if you begin with the switch backs. A definite must do once for sure and possibly again.

Great ride. Watch for sand at tunnels. Witnessed one wipeout needing EMTs.

Great trail. Started at trail head, did the western route first and worked our way backwards. Beautiful day, switchbacks on western side are a nice challenge on a bike. My legs and lower back are feeling it today.

I loved biking this trail while I was living in Decorah in June and July. It is long, but a great trail and beautiful views along the way. Try biking or running either direction.

We walked this trail in the morning which was really great because it is mostly shaded. We parked at the end of West Main Street in the parking lot at the trailhead and walked West along the river, then crossed through the campground to the right, and continued along to the 5th Avenue bridge. From there we continued through the neighborhood along 5th and back into town and across the dike to the parking lot. Great loop trail and fully paved.

Walking

Today we took a 3.6 mile out and back walk from the Trout Run Park on highway 9 to the Decorah Fish Have. It's an easy walk and on the way we saw the Decorah Eagle Nest.

Starting at Trout Run Park on highway 9 in Decorah is the Trout Run Trail Loop Freeport Extension. Like the rest of Trout Run Trail, the extension is a 4 foot wide paved trail mostly flat great for walking, biking or skating, and dogs are allowed on a leash which is great because a half mile up the trail is Decorah's brand new dog park. The first section of the extension that we covered today is a 3 mile out and back walk to the edge of Freeport. (It is 1.5 miles from Trout Run Park to Wellington Place.)

Great hard-surface trail - walking or biking. Parts are flat; parts give you a run for your money with steep hills and switchbacks. Very scenic in most parts.

Actually, my family and I did this trail on rollerblades, though I imagine it would be great for biking. The trail is nice, though hillier than one would expect Iowa to be, and it does not offer much shade coverage. If you go out on a hot day, bring lots of water. The fishery is a really interesting stop as you’re going along—I thought it was neat to see. Afterwards, have a nice meal in the downtown, and even stop by Luther College and take a quick tour about the beautiful campus.

First to Review

Fun loop around a beautiful town. The eastern half (from town, around the hills, ends at the fish hatchery and eagles nest) is relatively flat and requires minimal effort, but still gives you a nice view of the area. The western half (fish hatchery, multiple hills and switchbacks, through the cut and along the river) requires much more effort but is definitely worth it. Beautiful ride can be had on both halves. Take a virtual bike ride around it in two minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVYz-u1Jrv8
