This is a fun trail but it is by no means easy. I’d say moderate because the hills are pretty relentless. My Fitbit said we climbed 44 flights, so just know that. We did take a side track down to the creek - so about half that if you stick to the map above.

The only reason this is less than 5 stars is because the first third of the hike is shared with the looming presence of the tallest, angriest smokestack you’ve ever seen. Just such a shame in such a beautiful place.

Trail markers are spotty. Start at Observation Tower trail (climb the stairs for a good view of the river valley, mentally cropping out the bellowing smokestack) then hairpin down the hill - go right at the crossroads to take the trail up the the road - then hard right back down to the observation tower parking lot. Recommend the hard left down to the creek first, though. Adds a lot of hill but worth it.

All in all a challenge for we non-experienced a little out of shape middle aged women, but we felt great after. Went to the nearby lodge restaurant for iced tea after and worked a random jigsaw puzzle. Great day, fond memory!
