Fall Creek Gorge Nature Preserve [CLOSED] is a 1 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Attica, Indiana that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Note: As of July 2020, Fall Creek Gorge is CLOSED due to ecological damages and safety concerns. Please check with the preserve page for more information: https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/places-we-protect/fall-creek-gorge/ Be advised, the first "off-shoot" that leads up the creekbed is NOT the trail. Continue past the creek, and up the rocks to oversee the potholes. Trail was very easy to follow, but be prepared to get muddy due to creek drainage.
Area is closed today. It appears permanently closed by the way the parking lot was covered with downed trees that were cut intentionally and the area is marked no trespassing. I hope the property owners decide to reopen the area. I have hiked here before and it is so beautiful!
Did this hike with my 6 and 11 year old on January 6th. No one else was around all day which we enjoy. Kids had a great time on the rocks around the falls. The 6 year old was a bit nervous at how close the trail was to some of the dropoffs, but don't let that stop you, she did great. We'll definitely do this hike again.
Bring water shoes for walking across or in the water; it's easy to slip and fall. Also, watch out for poison ivy everywhere here. Take the trail from the parking area down to the first water crossing, CROSS IT, and look to your left to find the potholes. Then go up the steep steps by that first water crossing and follow the trail high above the gorge to another waterfall and more beauty. For such a short hike, there are a large number of stunning vistas.
It is an extremely wet spring so the trail was slippery. We were prepared with water shoes, wipes, towels, plastic bags, spare shoes, and spare clothes. We used it all, but it was all worth it. I forgot my walking stick and paid the price. There are no restrooms and only 4 parking spaces. It is truly a hidden gem. There is no cell reception either. We should have taken 41 to N Pothole Road. There were points where we were on single lane dirt roads and gravel roads. E Hogback Hill Road is not a good route.
I grew up in this area, I love this spot. Dog friendly on leash, kid friendly. Today it was my 3yr old niece and I. We were on a time crunch so we only walked a little.
The trail was very ice covered and tricky to walk in spots. It was also the middle of February and cold. The trail conditions were exactly what you should expect for a winter hike. I was here on a photo mission and was not disappointed. The views were stunning with ice cycles hanging from the gorge walls mixed in with a splash of green moss and last years fern growth. This is truly a hidden gem and well worth the drive. The water falls and potholes are just really cool to see and photograph!!!
Beautiful and unique area that's definitely worth the stop. Be prepared to get your feet wet to see some of the best views. Also, the main trail is moderate but there are alternate trails that take you closer to the canyon edges that would be considered hard.
