HikingGreat!

The Upper Falls is more powerful and scenic than the Lower Falls. Near the Upper Falls is a red covered bridge. Note, inside the covered bridge there is a lot of graffiti, but the outside of the covered bridge is very photogenic. The Upper Falls was very powerful when we went. There are two viewing platforms, but the best view is actually just a few steps downriver from the second viewing platform. The Lower Falls you can drive to or hike to. The Lower Falls is less dramatic than the Upper Falls. Just as wide but a shorter fall. But, still worth checking out.

Walking

We went to Cataract this past weekend after a lot of rain last week. Water was high and Upper falls were impressive. I also enjoy in dryer summer months when falls are calm. The trails are more of a walk than a hike, and expectedly heavily trafficked for such pleasant weather. The Cataract General Store wasn't yet open for the season.

Nature tripsGreat!Snow

It was extremely crowded, I had to make my own parking spot. The covered bridge was covered in graffiti. The frozen waterfall was beautiful and the trail was easy. Overall a nice experience, just don't think I'll drive 2.5 hours to visit again.

Great but a bit crowded as falls are frozen partially and beautiful. It is 26 and sunny. Hiked to both upper and lower falls. Great trip!

HikingIcy

We hiked this on 2/17/21. We arrived at 10:30am and had the trail to ourselves. We walked from the upper falls to the lower falls along the trail. Once at the lower falls we walked out along the rocks to get close to the ice from the falls. Much of the ice was not solid and we’d sink into our knees once or twice. Stay on the rocks. It wasn’t until after we left that we realized it’s the upper falls that has the feature to walk under the falls more completely. When we arrived we briefly scouted the area but couldn’t find a good access point to the upper falls and there was no one there to ask. Rumor has it, you’ve got to walk across the covered bridge and hustle your way down some rocks. My crew would have been down for it had we known. Next time. The road to the lower falls is cleared but still has snow pack, because of its steep grade and my Nissan Altima’s lack of 4wheel drive, I parked at the upper falls and walked to the lower falls on the quiet, snowy, path. Trekking poles are beneficial as there is a steep portion at the beginning of the trail. Our poles also proved helpful to test the strength of the ice. Bring your sleds. There is a great little sled run that we played on after we were done.

Nice easy walk. One steep area near upper falls was slick due to snow, ice, and mud.

Cool place to see two waterfalls in one short hike (or drive the paved road to both of you so choose). Also a cool old covered bridge.

The trails were marked well. Beautiful walk, u will need to mind your step going the ridge side near the start of the trail. I wasn’t a fan of walking the road back loop, so I took the cut off taking me back to the initial trail with an invigorating climb back up the ridge trail. The river walk is worth it. Take your time and explore some of the river edge trails. Cheers!

The falls are beautiful. The trail is well marked and maintained. I was there on a Saturday and it was quite crowded, but it was still possible to find a quiet spot on the rocks in the river. Most of the trail is flat and easy, but there is a steep, difficult hill from the upper falls to the rest of the trail.
