there are about 4 loop trails here, all fairly level, with some slight hills. The main trail goes through a patch of forest, there are some shortcut trails that attach across the loop for hikers on a shorter path. There are two lookouts built. One is like a pier going out on the swamp. The other is built up for a view. The whole second half of the trail is a wild prarie with many wild flowers. The path is comparable to a road near the prarie. The woods have single hiking paths. There is a baby tree nursery here, and a pavillion with a nature walk,(many wildflowers kind of garden).

Easy trail that runs through a wooded area along Boot Lake, and then opens into a restored tall grass prairie. I concur with Casey, it is an excellent spot for bird watching, but admittedly during certain times of the year I feel unsafe walking here.

birding

Area is a medium high natural quality with a lot of native plantings. This spot ranks one of the top birding spots in the michiana area away from lake michigan. There are endangered Henslow's sparrows in the fields in the summer and a whole slew of salamanders coming from the mucky lake and wetland. It is also one of the only places in Indiana to see Sandhill Cranes all year long as they breed and overwinter there. The trail along the lake is best for songbirds and the trail in the back has a blind for wetland viewing, affording looks at Swamp Sparrows and Flycatchers. Also a good place to find Black-billed Cuckoos(in Spring) and Northern Pintails (in fall and Winter). When the lake is dry, shorebirds are a sure bet. One year, the lake completely dried up and was covered completely with Pipits. Trails are flat and there is a pavilion for picnics.

Very nice, scenic trail. However, I would highly recommend not going alone as there was a man adjusting his pants in the parking area. Easy to get lost on the trails as well, would recommend downloading the map.

Had to go to the website to get directions. The hike was worth it. The trails are nice and the lakes are beautiful. Will have to get back in the Fall, when foliage is at its peak.

I walk here with my dog every chance i get. It is very easy to hike, there are huge wildflower fields, deer and birds, and so many different trails that each trip is different. And the lake is beautiful.

Don't run here if you are alone and female. Nice trails and park but also some sexual predators who hang out here.

Was difficult to find with my GPS. Had better luck looking up the site to the preserve and they have a little bit better directions, but still easy to miss. Once on the trail it is beautiful, but it would be very easy to get lost. I never did see the lake, but it takes you through many fields. Still very beautiful. There were some less used trails that maybe would have taken us to the lake. Next time I plan on studying the trail map prior to venturing out.

Great place to walk your dog, trails are flat, great to run if you want to run in the park and not the pavement.
