this trail is the salt lick trail and Newman trail, the Johnson trail links into them as well, good for dogs and older kids some really good hills that will challenge you going up and down, but the overlooks and views are worth it. I visit these trails regularly for a good quiet hike with not to many people. after 3 days in these trails the 3rd day on johnson was when I saw the most people

Very challenging for me. I did this on my 5th week of chemotherapy. Everything from a bluff view to down in a creek where you lose cell service. I’ll be back to do it again!

This was a lot of fun! The inclines were a challenge for me early in the hiking season but I did It. I loved the creek crossings. Can’t wait to come back for the very Illinois bluff views!

Great trail! It rained the day I went, so the trail was very muddy. I wouldn’t recommend doing this trail without trekking poles when the path is muddy. It gets too difficult to get traction. Gorgeous views!

If your trying to social distance, don’t come here. Groups of teenagers meeting up and won’t move o the side on the paths to keep distance or let you through.

It’s always good on Salt Lick. More people than ever before with Covid-19 Shelter in place order and everything closed. Flowers are pretty on the Johnson trail portion.

Salt Lick Trail Loop+Newman Trail 5.8 mi /loop+out and back / moderate 1112 ft elevation gain Loads of elevation packed into these two hikes. Wasn't too muddy considering it just rained a few days ago, but definitely wasn't easy getting to the top, twice. Everything is marked very well and you just can't beat the view at the top! If you continue on to the Newman Trail, you will have at least 10 creek crossings. Some were a little tricky but nothing too bad. This is my second visit and I will definitely be back

i've only ever done this trail in summer or fall. it's always overgrown and bug infested. this was a delightful change. at the end the parking lot was the fullest i've ever seem it but the trail interactions with others were minimal

Waterproof shoes/boots are necessary as there are several creeks you have to cross. We went the day after a rain and creeks were very muddy and rocks very slippery. The inclines are super tough but bluff views are worth it. Still one of best trails in the area! Sunday 12-29-19

One of the best in St. Louis area in terms of elevation! You have the option to do 3 miles or the full 6 miles. This was our 2nd time back to trail and we’re the full 6 miles. If you want to do the full trail it is best to park at the church parking lot off n meyer ave in what is considered “new valmeyer” . The inclines are crazy good and the views are so breathtaking. There was a decent amount of people on the trail but everyone was friendly. We hiked with a group of 15 and majority of the group was sore the next day . Sunday 11.10.19

I absolutely loved this trail! Super convenient coming from south St. Louis and very easy to find. The trail isn’t blazed with markers, but it’s very well defined. I just followed my downloaded map on here to make sure I completed the whole trail. Major elevation gains for the little old Midwest. Someone had mentioned that there were several creek crossings on the Newman section of the trail and boy were they right! I counted at least like 10. Some parts of the trail are a little difficult to find around that section but if you look far enough ahead you can usually spot it. The bugs weren’t bad and I went after a rain and it wasn’t muddy, just a little soft. Good challenging little hike, I will definitely be back!

Lots of creek crossings on the Newman trail. We counted 14 one way and 28 total for out and back. Check out BCOA.tv for the video of our hikes.
