Officially dedicated in 1989, the 26-mile Rock Island Trail is the first railway conversion completed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Stretching from Alta, in Peoria County, to Toulon, in Stark County, the park offers many natural and architectural attractions in a tree-canopied corridor that is only 50 to 100 feet wide. Open from dawn to dusk.

Awesome trail for just a good long wide open trail for a work out or to take your kids on. Pulled two toddlers in a bike trailer with zero problems. My 8yo loved it on his bmx great family trail. They need to add the section that runs all the way from Tulon Illinois to Dunlap Illinois to this trail

Love this trail for biking, running or just walking! Some parts usually get a little mossy in the spring, but otherwise it is usable year round!

washed out

After really heavy flooding the trail is in rough shape at the Wyoming to Princeville section. Lots of standing water and a washout. Not the trail maintenance crews fault but frustrating non the less. Tried to bike with my mountain bike and the surface was very soft so constant pedaling was needed to keep momentum. This will be a nice shaded trail once the trail dries out.

Excellent trail! Beautiful scenery and lots of shade. Some inclines but not too much, pretty smooth and easy ride.

Nice trail close to home. Crushed gravel makes for a generally smooth surface that dries out pretty quickly. Good place to go when you're short on time and need to get a quick run or ride in without the need to venture out of town.

Great trail for a nice ride. River to Dunlap round trip 25 miles.

Very easy and flat trail that passes through Peoria. This trail goes for miles and miles, much more than the 23 as it connects to other trails going out passed Morton or out passed dunlap. But it is great for walks during the week and you can add weight to a backpack of you want more of a challenge.

I love this part of the trail. It's fairly shaded once you get past the first mile which is really nice in hot weather. The tunnel is creepy by yourself but ok if you have a buddy. I love running here as well as walking.

For biking I give it a lower rating as it's just too boring. But if you want to go for leasurely bike with someone new to biking that is scared of road and trail it's ok. But it's closer to road then mountain biking.

Nice trail. Crushed gravel/ compact dirt surface is generally smooth and well kept in the southern portions of the trail. Some walnuts and debris are more common on the northern portion of the trail. My only complaint is the trail ends rather abruptly- only a sign with an odd mile marking and an absence of more trail lets you know you are at the end.

It's a converted railway grade -flat and straight. But there's plenty to keep young ones excited about what's next, and it's the only trail (that I know of) this long in the Peoria area. Nice wildlife. Saturn from the biggest model solar system is within a couple miles of the Alta parkng lot.

A great family outing, this wide and flat trail is well groomed and nestled in a canopy of trees. It is novice-friendly, though parents need to watch for the few road intersections. There are also a few hills that are only slightly more than "gentle" that might present a challenge to the very young.
