A light rain yesterday turned this into a soggy bottom boys hike. A couple of scenic views along the trail but not a ton. Best for it's central east Illinois locale and for the exercise value. The lake looked nice and plan on bringing a kayak back sometime. I lost a knife between 3and 4 mile marks for anyone heading out soon. Best of luck.

Trails not super well-marked in all places. May try to get a cleaner recording for Windfall Prairie next time.

Fairly nice view of Lake Mingo and Middle Fork River. Could be extended by taking the trail down to Collins Archeological District. Would be a pretty good for a dog, especially since Lake Mingo seems to be fairly clean.

Trail is in great shape for February with snow. Numerous eagles out on the lake.

After the heavy rains on 1/11/2020 -- suspension bridge out on portion of trail near the cemetery (east side of park). Trail is slick. Wear tall waterproof boots and walking stick if hiking today.

Quiet simple trail. Often follows the edges of coves along Lake Mingo. Early and late in the day offers glimpses of deer and great blue heron. Serene in all seasons, it's beautiful now. Bring a walking stick... I'll upload a photo from 6 Sept 2019.

Such a great trail! Wouldn’t recommend doing this one when ground is wet as it can be very dangerous. Spider webs are like every 10 feet but that’s nature.

Good loop to do any day, had many turn arounds and gets you lost, just keep an eye out for signs every now and then. Gets kinda confusing around the power line crossovers. Been here many times and many more to come!

Have run this several times for the Kennekuk Road Runners annual event. Very enjoyable trail for central IL, and is for sure the gem of Kennekuk as a park.

This is a hilly trail for the area, which isn’t saying much. There are some steep inclines, but for the most part it’s sort of monotonous since the woods around the lake are very new growth with lots of underbrush. The notable exception to this is right around the trail to the Collins site, near the dam. The views of the lake are pretty, and there are several convenient benches. It’s a nice hike, but underwhelming in late November. I might try again in the spring.

One of the best trails in the entire Midwest! This trail takes you around a scenic lake in Kennekuk Cove Country Park. It's great for running (a challenging, somewhat hilly course) that great for your dog too! Enjoy this loop and it's serenity. The summer months (especially July-September) means a bit of bugs, but quite a few spider webs on the course. If you go on a weekend in the later morning, afternoon, some folks probably will have already walked it, and taken care of the spider webs that intersect the trail. It's a great loop either way!

Very wooded trail in a nice park. Great recreational opportunity in central Illinois. Other than a few steep inclines, I did not find this trail to be very challenging, however. .

This is a great trail for being central Illinois! The trail is a 7.5 mile loop around the fingers of Lake Mingo and has some ravines with foot bridges that cross the rivers that feed into Lake Mingo. There was some pleasantly surprising geography for Central Illinois! Ravines, beaches with deadwood, forest, a patch of farm land with Eagles. Kennekuk Cove also features a historical town with a school house, chapel, grocery, and barber. Kennekuk Cove is just north of the more well-known Kickapoo State Park. The trail goes all the way around Lake Mingo -- for that reason it is an all-or-nothing trail (or going out just a bit and heading back). If you do only go a little ways in, then make it the Collins Archaeological site. The Collins site has a beautiful trail that runs right along the Vermillion River. Access to the Collins site: cross the dam first.
