I&M Canal is a 14.8 mile lightly trafficked point-to-point trail located near La Salle, Illinois that offers scenic views. The trail is good for all skill levels offers a number of activity options.
I&M Canal Trail is 96-mile route along the Illinois and Michigan Canal that passes through numerous state parks, restored historical sites, and abundance of wildlife and distinctive landscapes, ranging from bluffs to rolling hills.
Just hiked the 14.7 mi from LaSalle to the Fox River Aqueduct in Ottawa to officially finish the entire I&M Canal Trail. Very well maintained trail. The infamous washout near Utica is no problem as there is a simple detour built around it. Not nearly the additional hike as the one in Morris. If you have time, take the side trip into Buffalo Rock State Park for some awesome bluff views of the river and some alternate trails. Also a good place to fill up the H2O supply. All 4 camp sites on the trail west of Buffalo Rock are open and maintained. No services so be prepared.
Great network of light hiking/medium heavy walking trails along river. Well maintained. Several wooden steps, bridges and other improvements to ease access but enough up and down to make it feel like a hike. Trails are wide and sandy with some roots. Suitable for trail run.
Rock formations, canyons and overhangs worth the stop. Car camp sites look good.
This is a beautiful, crushed limestone trail running from Ottawa in the East to LaSalle-Peru in the west. It's been a few years, so I don't know how the trail is maintained, but at the time I had no difficulties using my road bike on 700cc tires.
The trail is actually 15.61 miles. Not sure why the app shows such a shorter distance.
