The Giant City Nature Trail is a moderate hiking trail located within the Giant City State Park trail system near Makanda, Il. L, The trail located near the Devils Standtable, an amazing rock formation and is perfect for wildlife viewing, photography, and exploring. As you begin the trail at one of the picnic area parking lots the trail features gravel or flagstone steps originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) companies during the mid-1930's. This is a loop trail that passes by several features of interest to children, including a maze of low walls and crevices that are fun for climbing, along with a couple short tunnels, leading to Fat Man's Squeeze. Native White Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Dogwood and Maple are common along the trail along with abundant seasonal wildflowers. The trail continues on and you walk under a very large balanced rock. As you head downhill, and under a huge sandstone shelf, you can easily visualize how Native Americans used these shelters as protection from the weather.

“Nature Trail” names scare me off as they tend to be lame but not at all the case here. Short distance but you can spend plenty of time here taking it all in. Really neat little place and very worthwhile!

If you only do one hike in Giant City State Park, do this one. Home to the namesake sandstone bluffs that make up the "Giant City" streets. They rate the difficulty as moderate but only if you are really out of shape or wearing flip flops. It is easy and would be great for grand kids and grand parents alike.

Pretty well kept trail, very easy hike if you have kids or older family members. If you are looking for a challenge this isn’t the trail for you but worth the 20 minute hike to see some of the scenery

Awesome trail. My favorite trail in the park, its a hidden gem! Signatures on the walls from the 1800’s!! Trail is marked well and there are some great spots if you like to veer from the trail a little.

This was a great trail, even in the rain. There were muddy spots, but most had a way around them. Beautiful terrain and very interesting.

The gem of Giant City State Park. It is an easy 1 mile loop that lets you walk between big rock faces that really make you feel small as you navigate their "cracks." This is well suited for kids or people of all ages. If you're visiting Giant City, this is a must see.

We went late February and there was no one else on the trail. The 3 and 1 year olds were able to walk the entire trail (very slowly of course). The rock features are fun!

Very easy, quick hike. Beautiful, moss-covered rock formations. If you're looking for something that takes less than an hour, this is it.
