A hilly, heavily forested loop through valleys on both sides of the road. Not much scenery other than the trail and the woods. A little overgrown in a few places, with a couple fallen trees and several sections with ruts down the middle.

Great trail. The weather was beautiful, and the trail was dry. Marked well and easy to navigate, but the end was challenging with a steep incline. We saw lots of animal tracks and, finally, we saw a small opossum near the end. Would do it again.

Good trail. Was a little muddy in a few spots but a lot of work has been done to it recently. Tree trimming and laying gravel in the trail had been done. With all the leaves gone there were plenty of gorgeous sites.

Trail itself was great. Not as difficult or hilly as the hikes getting to it. I’d even say pretty easy actually. A little overgrown but I don’t mind that. Most annoying part was that it’s clearly not hiked often so the spiders and spider webs were ridiculous. Every foot or so there was a fancy web with huge spider. Find yourself a good stick for knocking them down.

Trail is fully shaded and packed earth. We travelled clockwise and the first two miles is lovely mature forest. The last mile passes through the lowest elevations where there is a lot of understory growth and a tons of spiderwebs, we needed to wave a stick non-stop to clear the path. There were.a few trees over the trail but they were small and easy to get past.

Hiked in early May, during time Alton was experiencing some flooding. There were parts of the park land under water, and maybe the reason for soooo many gnats, etc... Pretty setting. Best view was the Flagpole lookout which was also where the parking was for the trail. Saw birds, squirrels, several different frog varieties, wild flowers. We began at Hickory North to access Fern Hollow almost immediately. This choice created a largely uphill hike. Had we crossed the paved road to begin instead at Hickory South, would have been largely downhill. Would love to try again when ground isn’t so soggy & muddy from rain.

Decent trail. very muddy and plenty of annoying bugs in the Spring, though. The trail starts as the same start for the trail Hickory. taking Hickory South starts as down hill for a bit, then pretty much the rest is uphill returning North. at the first fork go left to stay on Fern Hollow trail. If you take Hickory North, take a right at the first fork to continue onto Fern Hollow trail. This route makes it mostly down hill with a bit of up hill at the end. we saw plenty of birds and squirrels, one snake (garter), and plenty of frogs. not bad trail, but not gorgeous either. oh, and as the name suggests, plenty of ferns.
