The only reason this isn’t 5 stars is because the trail(s) can get a bit crowded at high traffic times. Most recently I went for an evening ride, around 9:30 pm and the lanes were wide open. Weather was perfect and the view of downtown spectacular.

Start on the south side and work your way up! The skyline from the south is and always will be a better view and it's great to have it as your "guide to halfway" focal point through the first half of the trail. Note that the trail from Ohio to North is closed and beaches are not currently accessible. Also, wear sunscreen! You are walking in direct sunlight for almost the entirety of the trail. For a city hike, it sure is spectacular!

I was so proud of myself for doing this entire walk! I started where All Trails says the finish is (the south shore end). I’m glad I started there because it’s a sketchy neighborhood and am glad I didn’t end up there at night. I took the redline to the Metra to get to the start. A guy followed me for a couple blocks and there was no one else around. But then I lost him and found the start of the trail and everything went better from there. It is a beautiful and long walk. There gorgeous views of Chicago along the way... There are plenty of bathrooms along the way but they were ALL CLOSED for the season. So I had to find places to pee and then after about 4 hours I decided to go and walk up Broadway instead of the Lake path so I could duck into a Starbucks if I needed to along with the way... I do recommend doing it if you have a free day!!

It's a great trail I've used many times, but it can be quite busy and traffic noise is more noticeable than I like.

If you are a road cyclist who has the technical skill to avoid pedestrians/rabid free-ranging toddlers, joggers, tourists, crossing vehicles, and potholes, you’ll enjoy this frogger of a road trail. If you aren’t so adept, consider riding either the northerly 8 miles or the southernly 10 only. The middle is busiest, centered around Grand Ave/Navy Pier., especially on weekends 9-5.
