Tried this out on a sunny mid-October today. The turn for the trailhead isn't well-marked from the road, but the GPS directions from AllTrails are spot on. There's a nice little parking area at the base. Took the East Trail up -- it's a bit overgrown and there are places where trees have fallen across the trail and a few spots require some minor off-roading, but staying with the trail isn't particularly hard. The final incline is the biggest challenge, both in terms of steepness and footing. Very quiet -- didn't see another soul until we got to the top (where you're liable to see some tourists milling around by the cross). The downside to the quiet is that is that we went through a lot of cobwebs, but that's not the end of the world. It wasn't at all obvious to us where the West Trail would've taken us or how to hop on it to take that way back, but we weren't too bugged by that, because we enjoyed the East Trail. Not a super long hike, but a bit challenging as Illinois hikes go and ends at some pretty excellent views at the cross site.
