Hard hike when highs are in the 90s, so start early. I only had to step over one log, so the trail has been cleared out well. It is slightly overgrown.

Nice intro to the Sawtooths. Hiked it solo for two nights up to the second lake. Lots of people camped at the first lake, so the trip up higher was worthwhile. You can access the ridge above the 2nd lake up a scree slope for views of Warbonnet and other peaks in that area. The general area has been burned, so the scenery is a little stark. Be aware that the campsites at the lakes are pretty beat up by careless campers. Don’t forget to check out the restrictions about fires and practice LNT.

Great hike. Lots of wild flowers out right now. The lakes are stunning. Pretty easy and gradual incline until the last 1.5 miles or so. Description says 10 miles out and back to first lake, but closer to 12.5 miles. No mosquitoes until we got to the lake.

5 creek crossings and all but one had handmade bridges (logs, rocks). The other was easy to cross with sandals. Lots of wildflowers currently blooming. We camped up at the 2nd lake as there were about 5 other groups at the first lake. It’s worth going up to the 2nd lake and exploring the area up top, seeing the other 4 lakes up there. (It’s all off-trail, so find your best route up!) Mosquitoes weren’t bad and only at the lake when we stopped.

Wonderful hike. There was a little snow at the top. Once at the trail creak lake we went to the second lake and it was still pretty iced over. The river crossings were easy... once or twice the trail was a little tricky to see but easy to fine. Definitely some cute camping spots up by the lake. Loved it.

One water crossing the rest had bridges. Some downfall to traverse but east to see.

Hiked trail 5/30/20. Both sides of the trail, as my recording shows, were washed out and I couldn’t cross the river. Water was extremely high and fast. Will hike again in a few weeks. Ran into another group that said further up near the lake that snow banks blocked their way up to Sawtooth Lake.

This is a fantastic trip, and for all my trips into the Sawtooth Wilderness, was my first time in via Grandjean. Nice shortcut as it saves an hour of commute. Even though this trail was rated as "hard" I found it to be more moderate. Very good trail condition with one spot at about 3.5 miles that has a detour from fallen timber. It is important to note that you will hike thru a burn. Normally I try to shun any hike thru a burn, but made an exception. I am glad I did. While it is a older burn, the wildflowers and fireweed where spectacular. You gain alot of altitude on this hike, but it is very steady, nothing too steep until you get to the last 1/4 mile below the lower lake where it staircases a bit. Just below the lake, an older trail seems blocked, directing you towards the right. Take it. Both work, but heading right is a better route. Once you reach the lake, you will note the burn ran right up to the lake. The lower lake has 3 to 4 decent camp spots, but we wanted a vista, so hiked another 1/4 mile up a scramble like path to the Upper Lake. The view is worth it. The upper lake gives access to another pond like lake to the left, and Regan and Trailer Lake. I wanted to get up to Regan and Trailer Lakes, but we just came up for an overnighter and ran out of time. There had been alot of thundershowers, and the bite seemed to be off on Fishing, but we did catch a beautiful 14 inch Cutthroat. Id like to get more serious about the fishing another time. I would have given a higher rating, but after all it was still a burn.

Great hike. Make sure to watch for the creek waterfalls. Your feet will get wet, and be ready to jump a few fallen trees. The upper lakes are gorgeous, but the mosquitos are thicker up there. i would have camped there if I hadn’t already set up down low. Where the lower lake drains you can see fish hiding in the submerged wood.

We came down this trail after coming from Sawtooth Lake side (heading west to Grandjean) and stayed at Trail lakes. We had mosquitoes pretty bad elseswhere but NOT at Trail lakes which was a great relief. Awesome big campspot for our group of 12 on the furthest end of the lake. Great fishing. I deduct one star because along the trail you have to cross a rather large creek and the bridge is just some logs and we had some people fall in. Other then that this trail is gorgeous but i would not take any young kids under 14.

Hard hike but totally worth the views! Probably one of the best backcountry camp sites I've ever had! Get ready to get wet, you will have to cross a creek or two. Great fishing also! Trout everywhere. If you look at the top of the peaks around this lake it looks like teeth. Awesome place!
