Bridge outSnow

There was a fire last summer, and the area is badly burned. The bridge is burned/destroyed, for example. I do not recommend this hike until the area recovers.

Backpacking

Took my 10 year old for his 1st over night backpacking trip. This was a great route for his 1st. We didn’t see a person on trail. Found a nice camp spot just past the Beaver Damn

Very cool trail had a lot of fun taking a solid good 3 hour Trek. Gorgeous views up and down the valleys as you climb to the top of the hills. I did not see a whole lot of wildlife but I did see a lot of moose and deer tracks. Totally worth the trip!

Really fun trail with some great views and changing scenery. We encountered 2 small groups of dirt bike riders, who were very friendly. Other than that we were alone all day on a busy Saturday in the park.

Backpacking

Good early season backpacking trail. There was hardly any snow since the trail is at a fairly low elevation. There are plenty of campsites on the Eastern side of the loop. However, the Western side gets pretty steep and there are no campsites in the northwestern quadrant of this loop.

Great for a short backpacking and camp trip especially if you are new to backpacking or are bringing someone new Lots of fun little of the trail spots that make great campsites and most of the trail is near rock creek so there is plenty of water. I just spent 5 days with on the trail with a friend who wanted to learn/practice some bush craft, we had a blast

We finally finished this trail after the third try. We started too late the first time and it was too snow packed, so we turned back. We did see a moose cow and calf across the creek that time. The second time we kept hearing grunting, and then when we got close to the creek we were growled at. We weren’t sure if it was a cougar or a moose, but we gave whatever it was it’s space, and turned around to go home. Finally, yesterday, we finished, but not without being growled out by moose on two different occasions. By the time we got to the top the trail was snow covered again and I fell down with my son on my back in four feet of snow. We turned around and took a side trail that took us in top of a ridge (about 7200 feet). We scrambled back down and met up with the trail. We encountered a trail runner who had come face to face with a cougar just five feet from him. If you want to see wildlife, this is the trail for it. I recommend hiking with a stick so that you can defend yourself if necessary. There are moose droppings all along the trail. I think they use it often as the trail goes along a couple of creeks almost the whole way.

Hiking

Hiked this morning, July 15, moderate difficulty. Good shade throughout. May want to wear a pair of light pants and a good portion of the trail has thistle growing at the edge of a narrow path: I had shorts on and was poked a bit but not horribly. Few spots on the end where the steep decent along with fine gravel makes things a bit greasy. Good overall experience

We took trail 238 to the right, the Wahlstrom Hollow Trail. It was beautiful! The trail was fairly narrow. From the direction we took, the trail climbs steadily. We were able to hike a little over 2 1/2 miles in before we decided to head back out. I'm a beginning hiker so I didn't want to over do it. There was patchy shade, so by noon it was getting pretty hot. We thought the trail listing as moderate was appropriate.

Wasn’t a bad hike! Took my dog on a Sunday in February and there were patches of bare trail. We only did about 2.5 miles out-and-back cus it was so cold but it was fun! Will probably do the whole loop this summer.

It was a nice hike, it is hot and dusty without much coverage from the sun in portions of the trail. Bring lots of water.

Nice hiking... gets the heart beating but besides being long, it's not rigorous. Loved it but some muddy/wet sections this time of year
