HikingOver grown

I intended to make a long loop starting with this trail, continuing to sawtooth lake and over the pass to return via TR 640 back to Stanley. Unfortunately after the pass was pretty snowed in so I felt it wasn’t safe to try and find the trail so I ended up with a 23 mile out and back day hike. I was very jealous of the (many) folks who had started at Iron Creek trailhead though that part was quite crowded on a Saturday. But the lakes are the best part of this hike and the first 8 miles from Stanley to the junction aren’t all that interesting. The trail is hard to find in many places and there a bunch of downed trees. Consider skipping the Stanley TH and seeing the lakes from a much more reasonable starting point unless you plan to backpack. The one great thing is the Stanley portion all to yourself which was nice.

Backpacking

This was a great hike with my dog while backpacking in the area, but definitely use alltrails app (or map) to navigate because it's easy to lose the trail near the beginning in a water crossing. It was secluded on a Monday in July, didn't see anyone for 5 hours, and there was a good mix of up and down. There were definitely mosquitoes at the lake once we got there, but nothing out of the ordinary. Crazy thunderstorm the night we slept there, but you can't help that. I say do it!
