SnowshoeingGreat!Snow

Way nicer as a snowshoeing trail than a (summertime) hiking trail. Parked up the hill where Freddy's Stack Rock crosses Bogus Basin Road, hiked up Freddy's for a bit, then cut cross-country on a spur down to Shoeshoe Hare. Off trail under the trees was consolidated enough that cross-country wasn't difficult. Shoeshoe Hare itself was pretty and quite uncrowded, but packed down enough to be easy going (was actually passed by a group hiking, rather than snowshoeing, but they were postholing every once and a while). Only difficult stretch was climbing back up the hill from Shoeshoe Hare to Freddy's Stack Rock -- wouldn't have made it without poles.

HikingGreat!

This was a great snowshoeing trail. Have to park across the street from trailhead. Elevation gain was about 400 ft but it was gradual.

The parking turnout indicated in the directions was not cleared/open around 9:15am today (10/7/21). We continued on to the large parking area for the Stack Rock Trail instead.

We went in the late afternoon and it was all great! We had some nice shade, beautiful views in different spots and the wild flowers are still in bloom. The trail was dry (I saw other reviews of it being really muddy) and dusty in some spots, but nothing too crazy. Definitely worth the drive up the mountain to get the feel of being in the woods.

This was a great trail for beginners. Make sure you stay to the right and go up Ponderosa Overlook at the first fork. The next fork you come to will be the loop either way. Stay on snowshoe trail. Trail is very wide and well groomed, more like a road. Lots of shade. A little creek goes through but not much water to see on the hike. Lots of wildflowers and butterflies when we went, early July.

Lovely little trail loop in the pines with gentle elevation changes. The kids (ages 5-14) were able to complete this hike easily with many stops to see the different wild flowers and loads of butterflies. We we’re happy that it was a wide trail the entire way so grandma (who is social distancing) was able to be part of the group and still able to be several feet spaced. There were a few large puddles in the middle of the trail, but we were able to skirt around them and keep shoes dry.

Great short loop if you’re looking for a quick moderate hike! There’s a few large water puddles along the path but not too muddy. Lots of intermittent shade. We did this loop on a Friday morning and saw two other parties.

Nice trail through the woods. Huge puddles last week blocking parts of the trail. Watch the signposts- we went down the trail that connects to Dry Creek for a mile before realizing our mistakes.

Great quick little loop to get away from most traffic. Trail was still covered in snow about 85% but still a blast!

Snowshoeing

Not a good place to park right at the trail head. We parked just around the next turn at the pull out, then hiked up and over the hill to catch the trail. GREAT powder for snowshoeing First part of the hike recently walked, so nice and easy. At the Y, we forged through about 1/3 of the upper part of the loop, then got tired and cruised through the trees straight down the hill to meet the bottom part of the trail. Headed ‘backwards’ on it to get to Ponderosa Outlook and sit for a few minutes. About 2.5-3 hrs outside, including dinking around with photos and a snack break.

Really nice easy snowshoe trail. Frequented enough that the snow gets packed down a bit so you don’t have to blaze a trail, and easy to follow.
