Snow Peak is a 8.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Avery, Idaho that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Great hike I don't know what was worse? Going up or coming back. LoL Up hill both ways. Outstanding views from the tower but the hike is mostly in the trees with limited views very dry with no water except the little bit of snow pack near the top. The flying friends where pretty mild today. My milage came up with 9.2 ml so maybe a bit longer than the post? Still a great hike. Four Star hike Five Star Views! The best part of the hike other than the views I was the only person within miles its pretty rare to get a trail all to you're self ;)
Great hike, didn’t see any wildlife but lots of butterflies. 4 stars because the trail splits with no real information on which way to go. There is a trail that goes off to the right, this will take you to the summit or you continue straight to a couple of small lakes with campsites. At the lookout there was a goat carcass that someone had taken the head off of. It had been there a long time but was still pretty stinky. I would not recommend climbing on the porch surrounding the outlook it was in really rough shape, use caution. Trail head had some debris but overall the trail was free of trash that needed to be packed out.
This is where the mountain goats are! Beautiful hike, long but worth it. Some flat areas near the summit to throw up a tent, then wake up early to watch the goats lick the walls of the lookout tower. Once darkness hit we could see the lights of a highway way off to the south that figured could only be Highway 12 down by Orofino!! This is going to become an annual hike for us, those goats are damn majestic.
