From Pettit Lake to Alice Lake was a lot more challenging than I thought it would be. It’s almost entirely uphill, and the All Trails app kept telling me I was off course, when I was literally right in the middle of the only trail. Once you get to Alice Lake, the views are amazing.... seriously. I didn’t make it to Twin Lakes though. Since I was lugging around a tripod and a heavy camera, I stopped to photograph Alice Lake and El Capitan and headed back to the campground. I thought I was in pretty good shape... (coming from Florida)... but the elevation really got me.

We did an out and back to Alice Lake with our 1 year old dog. This is a great hike with multiple creek crossings. Easily crossable with waterproof hiking shoes or boots. There is about a 1.5-2 mile section of rocky switchbacks in direct sun but most of the trail goes in and out of the trees. Multiple waterfalls on the way up to the lake with beautiful scenery. I was surprised by the amount of water flowing through here in August. There were a couple muddy sections on the trail.

Backpacked July 26-28. Great trail - encountered 5 stream crossings so prepare to do some rock hopping or take shoes off on the first cross. Camped at Alice Lake which was very busy! Visited Twin Lakes and the pass for our day hike. Breathtaking views. Bring bug spray because it’s swarming with bugs and mosquitoes (peak bug season).

Amazing hike! There were a lot of people at Alice Lake but we were still able to get a great camp site with a little exploration.

Pettit to Alice is only about 10 km but 500 pm climb, so good workout. Stunning views and impressive mosquitos! Countless campsites along the lake and all are beautiful.

This is a stellar hike. You will share the trail with others but pay no mind. You will love the view and never forget it. The only thing I will add is that Alltrails has a very poor mileage system, this trail being an example. The mileage points are arbitrary so be aware. The hike from trailhead to Alice lake is actually just over 6 miles. You can see this looking closely at the mapping but just a heads up. The view from Alice lake includes a very foreboding El Capitan, reminiscent of the Wind Rivers, and a ridgeline that resembles the ranges namesake, Sawtooth. The place is magical. Don't start late like we did, as we ended up with about 40 minutes at the lake. We got back to the car at dark.

Truly stunning! We did this as a day trip, and I wish we would have stayed a night or two up at Alice Lake — plenty of little secluded spots to camp. The incline was gradual, though make sure to pack really sturdy hiking boots (with ankle support) since the hike is very rocky (it is the sawtooths, after all). Definitely planning to come back!

Did the hike on June 2nd, 2018. There was about 4 feet of lightly packed snow during the last mile up to Alice lake, which was our destination. That made the hike challenging for this time of year but definitely hikeable! I highly recommend the challenge!
