Mount Heinen is close to Boise in the Boise Mountains. It is one of the 4 peaks that make up the 'Grand Slam' (the others are Cervidae, Shaw, and Kepros).

Followed the ridge up from Cottonwood Creek trailhead. Pretty hike, not much for actual trails, sheep recently grazed on top, super stinky!

The front of the Mountain was so difficult to get up because of the falling rocks and loose gravel which was about the first 2 miles (evaluation 5384 ft) hiking down was the WORST because of the terrain. Spent a ton of it on my assbut if someone told me these things I would have tried it anyway because I wanted to complete the Grand Slam量The view was spectacular and my pictures just don’t do it justice ❤️

Great views from the peak! Make sure you're ready for the altitude gain, the first mile or so will test you.

Heinen gets 3 stars simply for the views (spectacular). Current conditions: several portions of the trail are washed out; overgrown in several stretches; loose rock/wet sand on portions; LOTS of snow still present (made it far more difficult). Trail: The first 2 miles are steep with little to no switchbacks (painful). Doesn't get much easier with the mixed/poor terrain and several false summits. The steep descent combined with poor trail conditions are rough on the back and knees. Both GPS trackers had this trail at 10.2 miles r/t. Ran out of water (1 gallon). Took approximately 6 hours.

This hike was pretty at the start but the trailhead was not well marked and the beginning was straight up in sand and rocks no switchbacks. After the first 2 miles the trail became overgrown and hard to follow. So many false peaks and I was a bit worried there toward the end I would run out of water (had four liters). The last 3/4 mile I couldn’t even find where the trail was...I was tired of bushwhacking struggling to find the trail and turned around. With this being one of the Grand Slam Peaks it should be marked better and maintained a little more. While the views of sunrise were gorgeous over the lake at the beginning I don’t think I would want to do this one again.
