The trailhead has a clean pit toilet, parking for approx. 8 cars, and nice signage showing the trail system. You can hike to one of several lakes or make a 9-mile loop. The trail itself was well-traveled and easy to follow. We hiked to Moose Lame, and it was well worth the trip! Absolutely incredible! To get to the trailhead from Clark Fork ID, drive up Lightning Creek Rd (off Main St). That eventually turns into Forest Service Road 419. We drove up in a Kia Rio and had no problems - had to drive slowly and avoid rough patches, but it was no big deal. It took over an hour because we couldn’t go over 20MPH. An SUV or truck could go up much faster.

Came up from the Trestle creek side. Amazing views over the mountains, but read the trail signs carefully. We went up a wrong road which was not a pleasant drive on my car. When we finally got to the trailhead, it was a nice and steady incline to the lake. Saw 2 moose and a LOT of mosquitos

This was a great easy little hike. Great for kiddos! Gorgeous lake. I want to backpack up here and do the loop over a weekend!

Great in and out trail , easy to navigate and well worth it when you get to the beautiful view of the mountain lake. The road up is rough as you get closer to the trail head , higher clearance vehicles recommended and at times the drive can get very narrow and you may have to stop to let the other vehicle by as you are very high up and there is a drop off to the side so not for the faint of hearted if you don’t like steep drives but all in all it was well worth it and the perfect hike for families with young children.

Backpacking

We picked this trail because it was easy and quick. I will say that this trail is very pretty and the lake has a giant plastic bear proof trunk. Plenty of areas to pitch a tent. My only complaint was that the trail was very narrow at times with bushes taller then me and the trail got flooded on our way out. Not sure if there is a way to prevent that though. I would suggest if you are camping with a forecast of rain to bring some rain boots.
