Menan Butte Trail is a 3.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Menan, Idaho that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
A steep climb to one of the largest volcanic tuff cones in the world! The hike starts with a steep climb up a rocky and slippery trail. Once at the top, it will feel like you are standing on the edge of a crater. In the distance, you'll see mountain ranges and sand dunes. The two buttes in this area were formed around 10,000 years ago when basalt magma rose through the groundwater. The area is known to have an abundance of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, and birds.

April 5, 2021The trail is perfect right now. It was extremely windy at the top. The hike up is pretty steep but doable. Once you get to the switchbacks it is a lot easier. The rim is a lot of fun to walk around. Coming down is steep. Good traction shoes are very helpful.
April 4, 2021It was good! Not much shade and very sunny and hot. Luckily we had a good strong breeze the whole time. So that made it much more bearable.

March 21, 2021March 15, 2021March 15, 2021March 14, 2021Great hike with a fairly challenging climb at the beginning. Beautiful views. The trail was mostly dry with a few snowy/icy spots. It was fun to watch the bald eagles soaring overhead.
March 5, 2021Right now there is still quite a bit of snow up there. Around the rim it's not terrible but you might get a bit wet! Wear proper traction shoes and I'd suggest taking hiking poles. Going up isn't very difficult but going down is quite slippery and icy so be very careful. I'm going to wait a couple more weeks to try again, probably the end of March/beginning of April will be perfect. Right now there is still that February snow and ice.

January 8, 2021Snowy and slick but beautiful. Snowshoes good in some places, others have to take them off. Def need poles in winter very steep and slick spots.
December 23, 2020The hike up to the top of the butte was a wee steep for me. The trail going around the time had a lot of good views. It seemed the like trail should go in a nice loop up top, but I got a little confused near the towers. Overall, a good hike!
December 22, 2020It was nice. I underestimated the trail and didn’t walk the whole loop. It was pretty steep walking especially in slippery snow ;). We saw small bear tracks and pretty views.

November 7, 2020Very steep on the way up and slippery on the way down! A nice little hike though. I didn't have time to complete the entire top loop unfortunately but it was still nice.
November 6, 2020got down to rexburg for school and this was the first hike i did down here!! i definitely recommend getting up early and catching the sunrise! it’s quite steep and sandy, so i slipped a few times on the way down but i’m also just clumsy haha
October 15, 2020Fun trail! We took our kids, ages 3-15, and they did pretty well. There are some spots where the rocks are slick going down, but my kids loved climbing on the rocks and the views were beautiful!
October 10, 2020September 12, 2020Fun trail! I do it every once in awhile with my husband and the view is always so fun at the top. It is very steep so be prepared to take lots of breaks if you aren’t in the best of shape. Be careful hiking this trail if it is really windy outside!
