Want to climb to the top of Lucky Peak, but you'd like a bit more of the "trail" experience than the traditional "dirt road" routes? Here ya go! And if you've never hiked to Adelmann Mine, then you've got a two-fer in order! Start at the gate to the Boise River Wildlife Management Area, just off Hwy 21. There is limited parking, so arrive early during the summer months. Head north through the WMA buildings to start the hike. The initial two miles is an uphill grind over a lightly-used double-track. During early summer, it's a green oasis with lots of wildflowers. From July on, it's quite a bit more brown, and the Mormon crickets can be rather annoying. The higher you climb, the better the views become. When you reach a very indistinct trail junction (it's more of a small meadow), you have a choice - if you've never visited Adelmann Mine, you can head straight on the obvious for another quarter of a mile to check out the mine, and then double back to go up to Lucky Peak. To head straight for Lucky Peak, bear left and uphill. About 50 yards up the hill, the trail passes a large forestry gate and cuts hard right. It's still double-track at this point, but quickly necks down to a somewhat overgrown single-track trail that is quite a bit prettier than the double-track you've been on. The trail keeps climbing as the vegetation keeps getting more wooded. Once you top out on the ridge, like flicking on a switch, you'll suddenly be in a forest paradise. Here the trail levels out for a bit -- enjoy the rest and the wonderful shade! Next, you'll exit the forest and cross a couple of fences (don't worry - they have stiles for easy crossing). After the fences you're back on a rocky jeep trail as you head left and uphill. You have about a half mile to the top of Lucky Peak (head for the radio tower - you can't miss it). Boise State has a bird observatory here - you'll likely see the yurts and tents. Take in the views and have a snack before heading back the way you came. If you didn't hit Adelmann Mine on the way up, might want to consider hitting it on the way back.

HikingBugsGreat!No shade

This is a great hike. Other reviews are correct - no shade and lots of grasshoppers. The second half is fairly steep, so be prepared for that. We had three kids (12, 9, 7) who did just fine.

HikingGreat!

I did Adelmann mine to Shaw mountain and then out highland road. The 1.5 miles on the highway at the end was not ideal, but worth it to me to get to do the mine & the Boise view. Lots of katydids and grasshoppers on the trail. Trail was easy to follow with the map.

Definitely a bit disappointing realizing you could just drive to the peak, but otherwise a pretty good hike. It’s cricket season right now, so the hike up to the mine you may have to deal with them unless you start very early.

An amazing hike with beautiful views!! Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a nice easy long hike. It took us about 2 hours to get to the peak and about 1 hour down. We like to run downhill. Would definitely do this one again!!

Love this trail! The 2nd mile up is likely the steepest, but not bad at all. Saw a rattlesnake that quickly scurried away. Love the change in terrain throughout. The mine is super-cool, so don’t miss it. The views are just beautiful.

Great trail, pretty steep up to the mine but the rest of the climb was very lush and featured nice wildflowers. We saw lots of wildlife too

Beautiful views. Easy trail. Parking is limited to rough 6-8 vehicles so avoid peak times or you will have to come back. If you can hike or run Table Rock this trail is similar in vertical in spots, just a bit longer; pretty easy. If taking kids, be prepared for a slower go the first 2 miles, but they will be so happy they made it to top. They will be greeted by huge rock chucks, who aren’t camera shy, as they enter the mine area and amazing views all around.

Pleasant uphill hike on a 50 degree day to start. Very few hikers even on the way down. Wild flowers were in bloom so it was a great hike.

Very beautiful hike. Would recommend wearing a hat because of no shade. Best to hike when it is partly cloudy. The trail that goes beyond Adelmann Mine is overgrown but you can still see the trail.

What a great trail. Little over two miles up to the mine then I took another trail to climb higher. Ran into snow and a lot of mud so turned around little less than 4 miles. Absolutely amazing and beautiful views up there.

This is a great trail! It was longer than 9 miles for me when I walked out to see the mine. There was a lot of snow up at the top, and my hiking shoes even got soaked through. Otherwise I really enjoyed it and would recommend it!

Had a good time on this trail. It really challenged me going up hill practically the whole way in. Beautiful view from the top. Snow and mud made it more challenging than if it were dry conditions but I loved how the elements challenged me and seeing the history of the old mine
