Really pretty hike! So much fun. Steep in the beginning but gets earlier. The road there isn't the best. I'd advise an SUV or truck.

Short and sweet (and steep)- if your directions tell you to take Fish Creek Road, don't. Drive through Arco towards Mackay and take Antelope Road instead. We made it through Fish Creek in our 06 Outback, but it took 2 hours and I would not recommend without a higher clearance vehicle

Hiking

Great hike, it feels very alpine! Like everyone else said, it’s very steep, especially right at the start. There’s a little shade every maybe .2 miles - my dog appreciated that to catch his breath! Took us under 3 hours and we walked to whole way around the lake and hung out by the water for a bit. The trail around the lake is pretty easy to follow and not much elevation. Gorgeous views at the top but also on the hike up and down. Only passed 3 groups on the trail, two with dogs. Saw two groups camping around the lake, there’s plenty of good sites. The last five miles of road to the trailhead were pretty rough, but it only took us 2h15m from Idaho Falls when Google Maps said 2h45m. No signs of wildlife outside of small critters, fish and some cows on the road in.

BackpackingGreat!

First mile is no joke, it's steep! The whole way in is uphill but the first mile is pretty tough considering the elevation and how heavy our back packs were. The trail is heavily used to Iron Bog and if you decide to continue to Fishpole Lake it is lightly used but is more uphill fun. Both lakes and both ponds are beautiful. Definitely worth the hike. Fish weren't biting but the mosquitoes were. We had a blast!

Made it with my 4 and 7 year olds walking the whole way. Beautiful hike. Planning to backpack in and camp next time. Perfect way to spend the day.

Hiking

Great trail. We took our kids for the first time on an overnight backpacking trip. 1, 2, 4, 5, & 9. Let’s just say the trail is steep, but we made it! Took us about an hour and a half to get to our camp spot on iron bog on the West side. Sweet camping spots over there, lots of coverage from sun and wind, but scarce on wood... bring hatchet or saw. The pebble “beach” next to our camp spot was perfect! In warm weather it would be great for swimming or fishing.

*the road to get to the head of the trial is pretty rough* First time ever hiking and I went with a friend. The beginning took a lot out of me but again I am an inexperienced hiker and out of shape

Hiking

Overall a steep hike, but we were with many new backpackers so multiple breaks were taken. Definitely worth the views! Beautiful but not much shade until you get to the lake. Great camping sites at both Iron Bog and Fishpole. We camped on the west side of Iron Bog. Lots of day hikers and people fishing, and unfortunately some trash to pick up including fishing line/hooks. No bugs while we were there. Overall highly recommend this destination.

Hiking

A little challenging at first, our party consisting of a couple senior citizens, myself and kids (11, 9, and 6) made it to Iron Bog in about 2 hours moving fairly slow. Hiked out in 40 minutes. Beautiful hike and lakes with beautiful Cuts. Ran into a few mosquitoes but not to bad.We ran into a little bit of rain -- glad we had some rain ponchos.

Excellent hike for the whole family. Just took a day hike to Iron Bog and the Fishing Pole Lakes two days ago. Our party’s ages ranged from 6-67 and everyone did amazing. Trail is clear and well groomed. The kids especially loved crossing over the water falls that cross the trail. Bugs were thick at the lake. Fishermen were not catching fish yet, they seemed to still be spawning. Lots of Big Horn Sheep tracks at the upper Fishing Pole lakes. Been coming here for over 20 years and hope to continue coming for that many more!

Hiking

We hiked in a party of 9, including. 4 year old. We all made it to the top. This hike was pretty steep initially but was well maintained. We did stumble upon a large bear about 1/4 of a mile from the lake. He was standing up sniffing the hikers in the front of our group. He then turned and ran down the ridge. Carry bear spray! The lake was beautiful but very windy. We didn’t stay at the lake long because it was really cold with the wind. The trail head says 1.5 miles but it is farther than that.

Water is cold the fish are fun and the views are fantastic! Many wildflowers on the way as well. Take a high clearance vehicle as there are a couple rocky spots.

Great short hike. Crosses a couple of streams during the first 3/4 mile. Pretty steep for the first 1/2 mile as well. Great views and lots of fish at the lake. Nice campsite with 4-5 foot snow drifts in places on July 9th at the inlet.

Hiking

The steep part at the beginning isn't that bad going up, but seems to me more dangerous on the way out. There is a lot of loose gravel that can slide your feet out from under you on the way down. Great little fishing lake with cutthroats and rainbows. It's worth fishing the creek between the trailhead and campground for brookies too.

Quick but steep hike. It starts off kind of hard if you haven't hiked in awhile. Eventually it levels off and the views are amazing. The steepness means you gain elevation pretty quickly and the breeze off the lake was a little chilly. Saw a couple pika while on the mountain and only one other person was fishing on the other side of the lake. Fish were biting at the little bugs so a good, peaceful fishing spot! Definitely will do it again and will bring fishing gear.

We hiked into Iron Bog Lake last year and liked it so much we planned an overnight trip with family. Short hike is a plus, the first bit is steep, and then gradual rise from there. From Iron Bog to FishPole is pretty short, just be careful of the rocks and uneven terrain. Our group had good luck with a total of 7 fish, with the biggest just over 12 inches. (None at FishPole with trophy restrictions 20"+ only, seemed over fished to me). Great spot for a day fishing around the lake, or camping. Seemed like a popular spot given the traffic we came across. We'd do it again.

I hiked Iron bog May 27th, there was about 4ft of snow at 3/4th mark and the rest of the hike and more. The beginning of the hike had clear paths, I'd say June and later is the best time to go.

Camping

It was a steeper hike in than we expected, it was hot so maybe that made it seem worse. It was also busier than we'd heard. We caught several 8-12" trout and camped next to the inlet. It was beautiful. Next time we'd like to make it to Fishpole Lake.

Beautiful area, great lake and camping spots. Easy hike to Fishpole Lake. Hike itself was very short (1.6 miles). but first 1/4 mile or so was very steep and trail was slick with small rock or I would give it 5 stars!

Hiking

The first half mile is really quite steep but mellows out after that. Iron bog lake is beautiful with excellent camping spots on the far side of the lake. Day hikes to fishpole lake and the other 5 smaller bodies of water were very enjoyable. I give it 5 stars based on the shortness of the hike and beauty of the lake.
