BackpackingGreat!

Hiked late September. First night cold sleet, then perfect weather. Trail was pretty popular and there’s a reason. Definitely do Imogene lake. The only suggestion, if you are coming from Alice Lake side if not miss the social trail entrance to camp sites along Toxaway. The main trail ascends and there are zero campsites along lake. Other than that issue, it was perfect.

Spent 5 nights in the entire area, great way to see everything (38 miles total). The dog did well with all the water sill available. Check out my trail guide/trip report: http://www.girlonahike.com/2020/09/backpacking-alice-toxaway-loop-more.html

Amazing trail, some of the most beautiful views I’ve experienced! I did the loop clockwise and recommend that to others because the scenery the last 7 miles or so isn’t as dramatic. The hike over the ridge to see lake imogene is worth it, it’s really beautiful and the shoreline reminded me a little of Lake Tahoe. If you want to explore beyond lake imogene, there is an unofficial trail to the west that will take you to a couple other lakes. I’m excited to go back to the sawtooth to explore further!

A great backpacking trip. Recently returned from 3 night backpacking trip in Idaho. I wouldn't have imagined how beautiful and calming it was. Read a lot of reviews about bugs, but had no issues for the last week of August. Will definitely make plans to explore the area more.

If you're doing the trail clockwise, go past Alice and camp at Twin Lakes. The spot is stunning and there are plenty of spots.

HikingGreat!

Awesome backpacking trip. Camped at Alice Lake, Imogene Lake, and Farley Lake. The passes were clear of snow and the trails were in great shape, and surprisingly busy for weekdays, but I think everyone is getting out more to escape COVID. Doing this trip clockwise is definitely easier than counter.

2 night backpacking trip July 17-19. Very buggy and a few snow crossings. Got a late start on Friday so we camped at Alice lake and Imogene. Both places were insanely busy- not sure if it’s because of covid, more people getting out, or what. If you can push the first day, try camping at Toxaway, rather then busy Alice. Also- when you get to Imogene, cross at the water fall to find camping on the north side; we followed the trail and camped almost at the end of the lake.

Hiked counter-clockwise on 6/22/2020. Snow above ~8000ft but not too bad. Made it to the crest of the trail to imogen but the switchbacks on the back seemed less passable than on the south side. Only hiked to the west side of Toxaway then came back. Plenty of people had come from Alice clockwise. They were wet but didn't seem too bad off from snow. 1 major water crossing at my knees (I'm over 6ft). Water shoes would have been helpful. Awesome trip.

Fantastic experience of a lifetime. Every one of the lakes and passes included in this loop have their own merits. Agree that hiking over any of these passes with a pack is challenging and pre-conditioning is a must. Bugs in late July a nuisance but not too bad. Snow fields mostly gone, no micro spikes needed. Have sandals for a couple of water crossings. Have a filter as exposed dusty conditions are very arid and drying. Be ready for epic sunrise and sunset colors!
