Hiking

Third time I've made this trek. This year, much was changed due to massive snow and rock avalanches (probably because of the March 2020 earthquake). This was driven home to my group when we were sipping a little whisky after the 11 miles from Grandjean to Baron Lake when an aftershock hit. Right above us Baron Spire rolled forward and crashed down the front of the mountain. Was just a little crazy to be right there for it. As we made our way to Redfish, there was a lot of signs of the effects of the earthquakes and aftershocks.

BackpackingGreat!

We backpacked this trail on 7/27-7/29. Day one was Redfish lake to Baron Lake. We camped on the shore of Middle Baron Lake. Beautiful. Mosquitoes were much worse near the creek so camp near the lake if possible. Day Two brought afternoon thunderstorms which brought rain for about 4 hours. Day three was the hike down to Grandjean. Rocky trail and slope made for a slow descent, but it picked up about 5 miles from Grandjean. Overall a great hike with great views!

Hiking

Did this hike from 7/27 to 7/29/2020. Started from Grandjean in the morning. The trail was amazing. With a full pack, the last 2-3 miles into Baron Lake was challenging but beautiful. There was only one stream crossing that we waded through. The views near Baron Lake Falls were breathtaking and amazing. Day two was Baron Lake to Alpine Lake. The hike up and over Baron Pass was one of the best hikes I have ever done. Seeing both lakes and the ruggedness of the Sawtooths was a never to be forgotten experience. Day three was Alpine to Redfish Lake. Again, the views are unreal. We did walk through a stretch of trail with fresh devastation, we guessed due to the earthquake. House size boulders and smashed trees reminded us of the power of Mother Nature. I can’t wait to come back to the Sawtooths!

First to Review

Started to do this hike today, I have done this in the past and normally would rate 5 stars, but about 6.5 miles in from Grand Jean there was a significant avalanche over the winter, downed trees everywhere and the trail nowhere to be found yet. If we came prepared to do some serious cross country I think we could have done it, but we ended up coming back
