Fernan Lake Natural Area is a 1.3 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from April until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
A little chilly out there, but it was a beautiful day and the lake was so calm.
Mostly for trail running I like how close this trail is for me and the views of the lake are nice however the trail is pretty short and some detours require out and back trips. When ice is present sections can be sketchy. Doing laps can create a more intense workout if needed. Pros: short, flexible distances, good balance of terrain for running, close to CdA town Cons: maybe crowded in nice weather, roots and rocks can present tripping hazards
I really loved this trail. It's pretty short, but skews more moderate in difficulty by alltrails standards, due to steep sections and a decent elevation change. Really beautiful views towards the ends of the loops, with a middle that has wonderful tree cover that makes you feel like you are much farther away from the highway than you really are. Proximity to the highway (and the noise that comes with it) is the biggest negative of this trail. It's a great little slice of northern Idaho that I highly recommend.
Trail in progress, lots of branch trails and lots of flagging to places trails are not existing.. but really good fun use of a limited piece of land. Will come back again.
Nice trail, pretty clean and not rocky. All though muddy right now. No snow
Great short hike. some step ups and downs. can actually extend and go around the lake by the freeway. lots of options on length.
This trail was marked "easy". It was def doinitely not easy. I'd be hard pushed to even say it was moderate because there were several places where it was very steep for short spurts, and other places had stretches of very treacherous footing. We were totally unprepared for that strenuous of a hike. So I don't understand the differences in other reviews. One said it was okay even for their friends who were beginner hikers. others said it was an easy climb. others said it was hard, so there were many switchbacks and I don't know if that's what the difference is, but we did follow the trails laid out for the loop and we're really struggling coming back up from the lake sedge
This trail is gorgeous, but you need to pay attention to the map! It’s very easy to go off trail because some spots of it are overgrown. However, this was an awesome hike that wasn’t too difficult; we had some beginner hikers with us and they didn’t have too much trouble.
