It is a one-way, counter-clockwise route around Shafer Butte that is also open to hikers and horseback riders on the first two portions. Morningstar Trail is a downhill mountain biking trail only. Hikers and horseback riders can complete the loop using Sunshine, Shindig, and Bogus Creek trails.

Around the Mountain was fully opened today (a reviewer below said it was closed a few days ago) and it was great. I was hiking, so I took Sunshine to Bogus Creek to end the hike, since Morningstar is a downhill mountain biking trail only. The wildflowers are still in full bloom and the views were awesome.

just got off the mountain today. around the mountain trail is closed approximately two-thirds of the way around. Don't let this stop you from traversing around the mountain via another route. I chose to take Elk summit trail to finish out my ride. There are of course other alternatives as you so choose. Other than that the trail is excellent - good riding good sun good views good people - as per the usual! Everyone enjoy yourselves, things look great on the mountain!

This trail was GORGEOUS! Hot on the backside and once we rounded to the front before the upper pioneer lodge. We got on the trail a little late, about 10:30 but stunning views all the way around. Peeks of the Sawtooths and little streams regularly offer a cooling breeze throughout the backside especially. Wildflowers galore in early June with an incredible vista including Squaw Butte when you rounded the north side of the trail. There were even large snow banks still. Once you get to the top of pioneer lodge, the trail is NOT well marked, as in not marked at all...so watch your map and make a hairpin turn at snow queen parking lot and watch your trail map closely. My feet hurt from wearing my running shoes instead of my hiking shoes...but all in all it was a stunning and glorious hike! Highly recommended. It took us 4.5 hours to do 10 miles.

Did this hike yesterday counter clockwise and it was very windy but beautiful. It wasn’t as heavily trafficked as I had thought it might be. There was some snow but not enough to cause any problems just a small amount of mud. It was pretty steep at the very end.

Hiking

Hiked clockwise to make it easier to see the bikes coming. Went up Bogus Creek trail to Sunshine, then went up the Sunshine cat track to the top of Morningstar where we picked up the main Around The Mountain loop. Hit a small amount of mud, and one short stretch of snow, but otherwise clear sailing. The actual trail is off-and-on pretty, with amazing vistas, but the extensive logging going on near the trail detracts from what should be a beautiful trail.

Very nice hike. Did it today with a couple of portions added to it. About 12 miles total. Very good scenery. No more snow except a couple of patches. I will very likely come back.

Beautiful hike, but only able to complete about half of it due to snow making for unstable/increased avalanche risk conditions. There is snow on 3/4 of the trail; however, definitely doable in micro spikes and with hiking poles. There are no signs/trail markers, so I was half following my Alltrails downloaded map and half making my own way by looking to where I wanted to go. I essentially walked up one of the ski runs to get up to the ridge line and continued along the ridge and partly around the mountain. I got about halfway (~ 4 miles) around the mountain, and decided that the snow softening under the sun, increased slope angle, and evidence of cracking made it not wise to continue at that time. I retraced my steps back to the inside of the mountain (closer to the ski runs) and finished the route via the Brewers' Byway trail and then the forest road back down to the parking lot. It was still a beautiful day out on the mountain and had it all to myself! Will have to complete the loop once the snow has melted.

Signs indicated Mountain Bikers should ride in one direction, so we hiked opposite so we could see them coming. Some really amazing views! Elevations changes weren't extreme, so it made for a faster hike than my normal pace. Mostly shady, though there are areas of full sun. Overall, I loved this hike and look forward to doing it again!

Super sweet! Lots of shade...there are parts in the sun so go early! However, we went at noonish and finished at 4ish and the sun wasn't too bad! Will be back for sure since we just found out it doesn't close until October!!!

Beautiful views. My favorite hike in the Boise area. Easily doable for any levels but others may find the length an issue. I was surprised with how many wildflowers were still in bloom mid-August. Numerous chipmunks and even hummingbirds! At the end, you cannot take the mapped way down. It is now for mountain bikes only (even marked stop signs with a skull and cross bones) but plenty of signs to tell hikers which trails to take down. I took Sunshine (the recommended route) and it was overflowing with wildflowers. Will go again in the fall.

Really fun trail! Slow traffic -We went on a Thursday and we only ran into two other mountain bikers the entire trail. We always enjoy the stunning mountain views at bogus. We definitely look forward to riding it again.

Hiking

Very pretty hike, although it's a mountain bike freeway (at least on the Saturday I did it). Tons of wildflowers, still, and the open areas were beautiful green meadows. More open than I expected, which, given the temperatures, made for a very warm hike by early afternoon. There was some flowing water on the north exposures starting about the 6.5 mile point -- this was great for soaking the hats, shirts, etc for a nice refresh. Would also be good for refilling water supplies if you have a filter along. Besides the constant bike traffic, the only downside was getting down from the top (the final mile), as both single-tracks were labelled "mountain bike only", and with the construction of the new Morningstar lift, it was hard to tell if paralleling Morningstar would be an option. We ended up taking some cat tracks back down to the lodge, but it really wasn't a great route. A very disappointing finale, especially considering how nice the rest of the trail was.

Really great trail. Lots of shade, great views the whole way, and very well maintained and easy to follow. Definitely high bike traffic, so need to be paying attention. Will definitely go again!

Great trails with a few wooden bridges and step over barriers to keep the motorized vehicles off the trail. Beautiful scenery and a lot of the trail is under trees. Sharing the trail with bicycles and hikers but most were courteous.

Read in the Bogus Basin Summer Activities and Trails pamphlet that MTBProject.com ranked this trail as #1 in Idaho and one of the top 40 in the nation, so I figured I’d try it out. Number 1 it is. I hike and bike trails in Boise all the time and this was by miles the best one yet. Beautiful single track for bikers and hikers. The views are those that photographers dream of. The trail itself is very well maintained. And as it says, this is a moderate trail. There’s some easy parts and some where it gets kinda technical. The climbs are excellent, not too easy but not too difficult. There’s some downhill and Bogus even threw in about a dozen berms to add more fun to the experience. The drain off from the snow flows onto the trail, but the people at Bogus are so damn smart, they decided to make rock bridges so the trail doesn’t get eroded and keeps it looking natural. Near the end when you come up to Pioneer Lodge, you can stay on this trail or go onto another. I went onto another trail which was an experience in and of itself. If I could give 10 stars, I would do it in a heartbeat!! Great ride today. Looking forward to my next ride on this trail
