The mine is approximately 14 miles east of Yellow Pine. This is well worth the ride, but plan on spending a few hours there exploring. Most of the buildings are still there, some standing in a fashion and others collapsed. The old mill still stands but the roof structure is falling down all over. There are many, many Kodak shots, the possiblilty of getting that great photo is good odds here. Cinnabar was the economic ore that was mined intermittently for mercury since 1921. There were several owners over the years from 1921 to 1966 until it was finally closed down. The main mining operation was for mercury and during the smelting the by-product was sulfur dioxide gas. This gas attached to the walls and rain gutters making it deadly. There has been several attempts to clean up the tailings and stop the run off from these tailings into cinnabar creek. All of this has been done at a cost of $1.225 million.
