It's a fun trail with decent views of table rock and down town boise. makes a cool almost figure 8 shape on the GPS. my only real problems were the large amount of bikers who refused to share the trail, and the obscene about of dog poop people refuse to pick up after themselves.

This is a one-and-done for me. Obscenely crowded (mostly with mountain bikers, but quite a few hikers, too). Highlights were the large swaths of Arrowhead Balsamroot, the Meadowlarks singing in the sagebrush, and the views of downtown Boise. Maybe OK on a weekday, but on a weekend? Never again.

I would highly recommend this trail to anyone with a pup! My dog loves it. We got lost a few times but found our way. There are a lot of bikes. That’s the only downside

Shane’s loop is a great trail! My recording stopped mid hike because my phone died but I went around shanes loop and took the two bears trail, three bears looked amazing as well and will definitely be back to complete that. Beautiful views during the whole hike, very well marked and maintained. Highly recommend.

Trouble with ice in lots of places. Beautiful city views. One water crossing. Easy elevation. Moderately trafficked.

Nice trail and not too hard. But So. Many. Mountain. Bikers! I probably stepped aside 30 (no joke!) times and ended up out there an hour after dark.

Great trails! We went on Ridge crest #20, Bucktrail #20A, Central ridge #22, to ridge crest #20, to Cotton wood crick #27, to Eagle ridge loop #25A. Beautiful land. A decent inclines up hill in spots to give a good challenge. Hubs and son loved the curvy down hills. Very enjoyable ride.

**The trail I suggested to AllTrails with the following description is NOT the Freestone Trail but AllTrails placed my suggestion here.** (AllTrails - You are going to get people lost!) Here is my description of Cottonwood Creek to Ridgecrest to Central Ridge to Shane's Loop, about 8 miles total and winding further away from trailheads than the real Freestone Trail: Lovely hike in the cooler seasons. I was very lucky to have an early February day in the mid 50s and a dry trail. See Cottonwood Creek review for info on riparian habitat, flora, and fauna. Follow the Cottonwood Creek Trail to Ridge Crest Trail, winding up and northwestish. Ridge Crest T's up with Central Ridge Trail. I veered west on Central Ridge to meet up with Shane's Loop. This trail can be easily accessed from downtown Boise and within 30 minutes hike I felt like I had left the city for backcountry, high desert wilderness. The Foothills seemed to roll on forever in front of me. I shared the trails with dogs and mountain bikers, and a few other hikers. Good idea to check the Ridge to Rivers, Boise local website for trail conditions. There is NO shade in the hills so bring a lot of water in the summer months. Trails can be muddy or snow blanketed in winter.

Nice trail, a bit of climb at first but mostly downhill on the way back. Well kept and fun to ride with nice views of Boise.

Bird Watching

Ok... So arriving at this trail had me confused because it seemed like the entrance to the Veterans Trails which it actually is. This route however is if you take a right instead of a left at the beginning and is honestly much more fulfilling. This section has a decent percentage in forest and there are many birds including hummingbirds, quail and some raptors. I would recommend bug repellent in the forested areas as the mosquitoes are in abundance. The climbs are moderate but much more interesting than the Veterans side. The mountain bike activity seems lower on this side as well which is nice for hikers and birders.
