Great views, but I would definitely bike instead of hike next time. Just some switchbacks all the way up the mountain. Shade practically everywhere. The gondola was closed due to COVID and everything was like a ghost town. I recommend going when all of this is over, the town is usually what makes this experience a lot more enjoyable.

Great hike along a well-traveled and well-maintained trail. Season is approximately May-November, expecting some ice/snow towards the end of the season. Mountain bikers are prohibited from using most of this trail, however you may run into a few during peak-season. Views are phenomenal. Expect your thighs to burn if you're not accustomed to this amount of elevation-conquering. Not a service road, contrary to another review. There are service roads you can hike, but the Bald Mountain trail does not overlap with them. This is a "single-track" trail.

amazing views! for an average person this will be quite the work out. i’d consider myself an experienced hiker and it took me about 5 hours in 85 degree weather. once you get closer to the top, the shade lessens. all in all an amazing hike and would totally recommend

Cool trail and food challenge overall. Just did the hike today and be aware that there is still snow fields past the Roundhouse trail turn off. I was not prepared for this and in tennis shoes so it made it challenging and some parts nearly impassible. I did see a sign for a detour but it was on the ground and I couldn't figure out which way it pointed. If you take the road up the last 1.4 miles (you'll see a trail sign at that road intersection) you'll avoid the most difficult snow fields.

The hike to the top of Baldy is a staple of our annual visits to Sun Valley. The map shows the trail all the way to the top, but this trail offers a lot of options for different skill levels. Some go as far as the overlook and back, others can take the Roundhouse Cutoff, or you can take it all the way up. You can hike out and back, or hike to the top and take the chair lift and gondola back to the base - free of charge in the summer if you're going down only. Downhill bike traffic is not allowed on this trail, but nearby trails offer a lot of options for bikers as well. The trail wraps around a large part of the mountain, offering a variety of views and terrain. It's a steady incline almost all the way to the top, without any grueling steep stretches, but also without much relief from the uphill climb. Our six-year-old made it up himself, and I carried our two-year-old in the backpack, making for about a four-hour trip to the top; more experienced hikers and/or those without kids could do it much faster. Water and restrooms are available at the Lookout Restaurant near the summit (closed but unlocked during the summer), or at the Roundhouse (open for lunch from late June through the end of the season), so there are good opportunities to rest and refresh before heading back down. The views throughout the trail, and especially from the top, are unbeatable.
