(Hiked on 6-22-20). Definitely start early or go late! No shade. Trailhead is on the left of Hwy 21, just past the Hilltop Cafe. You'll walk past a couple of barns/sheds on private property, but the trail continues past them. This would be a great trail for birders! Saw 6 kestrels, several lazuli buntings, a couple of western tanangers, and red tailed hawks. The hike is a consistent uphill grade to test your legs and aerobic capacity. Lots of lupine in June. Saw two bull snakes. The mine itself is cool! There's an abandoned hawk's nest at the top, and lots of marmots and chipmunks scurrying around. There was water in the creek at the mine itself (in June), which made the dog happy. Only three other hikers on a weekday. Nice view!

TONS of grasshoppers, flies, and other bugs, but mainly, grasshoppers. The trial from start-to-finish isn’t exactly meant for “hiking;” some parts of the trail have gaps of crevices so watch your step along the way. No shade, besides the last 5-10 minutes or the hike. However, once you reach the top, the mining house that sits on the cliff is great for pictures and a cool scenery. I wouldn’t deter anybody from doing it, but I’d recommend wearing some shoes with tread as you do risk the chance of slipping and sliding on your way down.

Fun hike if done in the earlier part of the morning due to having no shade later in the day. The trail is continues to go up and up which is a great workout with a light pack. Once you reach the top, you're able to walk over to the mine and take a few pictures. Although, there was a bird's nest that could house a pterodactyl, so use caution. Overall great hike for a workout on the way up and a nice walk on the way down.

This is a VERY steep trail! I had to stop many times on the way up to catch my breath, and I don't think of myself as too out of shape. There's absolutely no shade on this trail, so it would have been better if we went when it was cooler (not 75 and sunny), but either way, the bugs on this trail were AWFUL. Some of the largest grasshoppers and beetles and other bugs-- just hundreds of them jumping around your feet the whole trail. If the things I mentioned don't bother you, the views are gorgeous. I wish I could say I'd do this trail again since it's so easy to get to from Boise, but to me it's just not worth it.

Highly recommend hiking this trail no later then 11am. There is no shade except where the creek crosses the trail. The trail starts with a gradual incline for the first mile and a half. It then turns to a fairly steep incline with no switch backs which will leave you huffing and puffing. The mine was neat to see and learn about the history. There is a large hawk nest inside the main building so be respectful of its home. We ended up running all the way back down since it was getting too hot to walk in the sun for another hour and a half. We brought our dog with us and let him run off leash after the first service station since it’s so close to the road when you start. There were a couple people on the trail coming back down and they too had off leash dogs which wasn’t a problem for us.

First, parking can be hard when there are many people using the trail. There is not an actual parking area, other than the side of the road and in front of the property where the trailhead starts. Might look like you're going into someone's property but the Alltrails map takes you straight to the trailhead! The hike itself was gorgeous. It was a little challenging as the incline was steep in some portions. The view was worth it though!
