Put a pin in your map on this one. Considered "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific," the views will get inside you as one of natures most amazing sites on this big blue marble. Further up, the summit at Wai'ale'ale will grace you as you stand amongst one of the wettest places on earth. This was an amazingly wonderful "bucket list" item to see and experience with my own eyes. It was a wonderful drive to the summit, and along the way there was pull-off parking so a person could venture out on a day hike and explore some of the breathtaking trailheads Waimea Canyon had to offer. Unique to the island of Kauai was the "red dirt" trails that were all natural and packed hard and was as if you were walking on concrete; but make sure you have on your old trail clothes, because getting any of this red dirt on your clothing or gear meant a life-long reminder just what a jewel of an island this was. At the summit was like being in a cool misty fog because of Waialeale being one of the wettest spots on earth with an annual rainfall surpassing 450. The views from the lookout at this elevation and location were spectacular that is - if you had the time to wait on the waves of misty-fog-like deluges to open up and behold one of the islands great wonders.

It was a decent view, but this was not a hike. You park the car in the lot and walk about 200' away. It is handicap accessible so that's a great option for people who aren't able to traverse other trails.

Trail was a bit muddy so use proper footwear. Lots of great vistas. Heavy traffic from tourists.

This trail was definitely worth it. The views of the canyon were more of a highlight to me than the falls at the end.

Great, vigorous and short hike. Not much to see along the way except for some varied forest, but the payoff at the end in a great view and swimming pond at the waterfall is totally worth it. Even when dry there is some mud.
