This is one of the shortest hikes on Oahu. For many the drive out to this location will take longer than the hike up to the top of Puu O Hulu. Be prepared for a hot and dry climb to a set of bunkers with some of the best views of Nanakuli and Waianae. Puu O Hulu is a small ridge that is situated on the ocean side between Nanakuli and Ma'ili. It is clearly distinguishable from its double back that makes it look like a camel's hump with a water tank lodged in the middle. This split between the ocean side (kai) versus the inland side (uka) makes for an interesting hike albeit an very open exposed ridge hike. It can get narrow in certain spots with drop offs to the left and right; though nothing dangerous. There are a number of bunkers at the top with the most spectacular pillbox painted a hot pink(!) Take your time to enjoy the 360 degree views. On a clear day you can see all the way to Kaena Point in the west, Mount Kaala in the North and Kapolei/Campbell Industrial Park in the south.

Great quick hike. Steep in some places. Great view. Recommended water and snack because you'll want to hang out up at the top for a bit.

Fun, quick trail. Lot's of fun pill boxes up top

Great views. Moderate difficulty due to steep narrow trail. Wouldn’t recommend for little kids, but great for any moderately in shape hiker

This is a fairly easy hike that I think anyone could complete and the best part is that it comes with a great reward! We decided to complete this hike to catch the sunset and I would highly recommend doing this hike to do just that! It can be pretty heavily trafficked but there is enough space at the top for you to choose where you'd like to sit and enjoy the view. Getting down may be a lot slower after sunset considering the amount of people that were trying to leave the trail at the same time. Also bring a flashlight because it will be harder to see on the way back down after the sun has set. Really cool pillboxes, the pink one is super cute! My only reason for giving it a full 5 star review was because of how heavily trafficked this trail is. You can tell people frequent this hike by the stuff people leave behind at the top (beer bottles/packs of smokes/garbage).

Great hike, with beautiful views! Short and to the point. Try to start the hike prior to 9 am and you won’t be cooked out by the sun. Easy to get to and there is parking. Easy to miss the trail when driving it’s located about 9 light poles from the last intersection you turn on. Enjoy!

We went before sunset. It’s a quick steep climb, you will be out of breath even if you are in shape, but you shouldn’t need to stop much. There are around 5 bunkers at the top! All super beautiful and great photo opportunities. Full views of the west side. There were maybe 5 other people on each bunker. Super dry climb with a few loose rocks, so be careful to not slip. I semi- rolled my ankle on a turn going down but was fine.

Decided to hike for the first sunset of the new year... So did lots of other people -locals and tourists, young and old, human and dogs. I imagine it isn't this busy on any other sunset or sunrise hike, but because people tend to start the year off excited with hope and promise of what the year will bring... And trying to fulfill resolutions of health and activity.

The beginning was much steeper then I anticipated, but leveled out after 5-10 minutes. Took about 25 minutes to reach the pillboxes. In total it was about an hour round trip with all of the people and descending in the dark.

Gorgeous 360 views from the top. Complete ocean and valley and ridge views. Unobstructed from the top.

I would definitely do this again, but I would never recommend hiking at times other than the morning or near sunset. The trail is completely exposed and on the mountain side with no shade. Because of the heat and dry conditions of the leeward side, it would be too much for your beginning hiker or someone who is under prepared.

Beautiful from the top. Saw small children and a woman in her 80’s, many rocks to step up on and through so I was impressed to see people of all ages making the trek. Out past the pillbox that is after the pink pillbox you can walk along the top ridge with drop offs on both sides, if you are afraid of heights don’t do it! I had to bear crawl back....but was fun!!!

Beautiful views of the West Side of Oahu. Went with a group of folks with varied activity levels and took us awhile to get to the top. Path was somewhat overgrown and steep so be careful!

Fairly easy. Natural “stairs” most of the way up. Gorgeous view at the top. Saw all ages going up and down but would be apprehensive taking a child under 4.

The entrance is about 10 light posts back once you turn onto Kaukama. Do this early morning or after 3pm as there is not much shade and it’s a great workout getting to the top. Super fun hike amazing views. The pillboxes at the top are super cool and can get some great photos for da gram.

We were about to park and hike but there were a couple of police cars and a car - apparently the car got broken into. Won’t be doing this hike.

For those who like rock scrambling with some challenge, try starting from Hakimo Rd via the water supply access road. There is also a puka along the ridge. Some parts require some contouring and some parts require cliff face rock scrambling. We did a 3.4 mile loop via the highway since we dont have two cars.

Amazing views, moderate difficulty, overall very doable, but has a few tricky sections (I actually was able to complete while nursing a grade 2 high ankle sprain - not smart on my part but worth it). In all, took 1.5 hours (a lot of it was stopping to admire the island and pics).

Beautiful! It's a little steep in some places, but other than that, an excellent hike.

I did this trail at 7:30 am on a clear day. There were a handful of people already on the trail. It takes about 25 minutes to walk up. The trail is steep at first. It leads to a ridge trail at the top where there are 5 or more cement army bunkers structures. They're covered in graffitti. The view from the top is alright.

Warning: I noticed a lot of broken glass on the road-- likely the result of smash and grabs. Please hide your belongings or leave them home.

Great way to start the day. Great place to just hang out up on the pill boxes.
