I hike this trail almost daily with my dog. A great trail, well-maintained by NP staffers. Wild goats can be seen, sometimes right next to the trail. Wild pigs, too, but they are rare. Views can be breathtaking. Walk beyond the park boundary towards Hookena beach. The trail is clear all the way, usually. The whole trip to Hookena is about an hour one way. Best to hike in the morning - it can get nasty hot in full sun.
There are two trails that take you out to lava fields along the coast - one is right at park boundary, the other is about a quarter of a mile along. Both are easy and it is well worth the short hikes to get to the coast. The second one, just before the Kiilae estates development, takes you out to a small sandy area - nice place to have a rest and enjoy the solitude.

The trail is very easy, and it is a beautiful and significant National Park. Of great interest to us was snorkeling in Honauau Bay, located just north of the trail. One of the most beautiful places to snorkel on the island.

Fantastic. We visited twice - once to visit the cultural aspects and walked out the 1871 Rd (highly recommended). Went back the following day just to enjoy the picnic facilities!

Such a relaxing time, even in the rain. On the way out took the lava trail, then came back along the ocean. So much to see, crabs, coral, coconuts.

Not so much a hike as walking from very interesting display to extremely interesting display. The landscape was amazing and the history was deep. Worth the time.

Many Bible scholars have pointed out this site to be a very possible 'historical descentant' of the ancient Israelites' 'cities of refuge' which they were required to set up in their 'promised land.' The Hawaiian version of the legal rules/ protection rights for manslaughter/ murder offenders may have been slightly different, but one could not have asked for a more paradaisical setting on earth if one had to live here for the rest of one's life! We're sure you would agree!?
