Part of the trail was washed out. It took a little exploring to find the trail again, but at the tip was beautiful. Forewarned you will get muddy. There is also a way down to the river and the walk back along the river is beautiful. There are numerous places to jump in and see the natural pools.

This is a great little spot. While not a real hike (don’t expect to get your steps in here) it’s certainly a great return on the investment. Being our last day in Maui, and having 6 hours to kill before our flight, the family and I was looking for something quick and easy we could see without destroying our “going home” clothes. This was it. The whole think took less than 30 minutes and the needle was a fantastic site. The whole path is paved and the most strenuous part is the 40 or so stairs to the top lookout site.

A short trail that everyone can enjoy. Good for kids and old people. The youngest (2) and oldest (72) in our party walked the whole way without issues. Great views of the lush, green valley, rushing water and the Iao Needle of course. Path can be muddy or slippery with the moisture from rain and there are steps to navigate, so I would suggest a sturdy shoe or, better yet, a hiking shoe.

Great place to go on a cloudy day! Not much of a hike, but a great place to walk around and take in the amazing views!

not really "hiking". It's just climbing stairs and walking. It's a good view though. The secret trail is much better and more rewarding.

Love the valley! Pay close attention to the needle as the arch bridge may be hard to see pending weather conditions.

Would love to explore the area for trails but lots of restrictions for safety reasons.

Beautiful scenery but secret trails are an added bonus

Beautiful! Not a hike however!

Nice views, but the trails I came here for are closed off due to storm damage in 2016. Looks like there are people working there, perhaps to try to fix it, but they gave no estimate of when trails would reopen.

I believe the 'secret' hike they are talking about is the Iao Tableland Trail. One has to hop over the railings at the gazebo point, and follow a feint trail to the back wall of Iao. From there you have a spectacular 360 view of Iao valley and towards Wailuku.

Not much of a hike, just walk way and stairs. The view of the needle and surrounding canyon walls is amazing though, especially later in the day when the sun is going down behind the mountain walls.

Quick crowdy trail. Nice view.

It’s not much of a hike - really just climbing a few flights of stairs to a lookout point of the Needle. However, the land is beautiful. Mark Twain once called it “the Yosemite of the Pacific”.

Short walk to viewpoint. Do the secret trail instead.

This trail is closed, along with all the other trails in Iao Valley State Park. Tried to hike it earlier today and it was blocked off. The park website doesn’t say anything about these trails being closed.

Easy walk on steps to views of the needle and the gorgeous valley. A world landmark to share with all the ooh and ahh visitors. Was closed for more than a year after floods. Reopened Nov 22nd '17. The outer loop is still closed.

Beautiful, easy hike. We got some great pictures at Hugging tree. Does anyone know why it's currently closed? It's been a few years since I did this one.

This is more like a ramble through the woods. I spent a half hour here just walking around and exploring down by the river. Beautiful, but not much to do. It cost $5 to park unless you're a resident of Maui. The trail re-opened Aug. 5, 2017 from a massive flood that wiped away part of the walking path.

Definitely go past the railing at the end, but wear real shoes (not flip flops.)
