This is a great trail that runs from the back of Hahaione Valley through the back of Ka'alakei Valley, and up Mauna 'Ohi Ridge to the KST. It is one of the most beautiful walks along the KST to the Kuliouou Terminus. Once there, its back down Kuliouou Trail to the Boy Scout Camp tables. The turn off is behind the shelter. Its a steep and slippery slide down the hill on a bed of pine needles. Once at the bottom there is a tree marked with arrows. Turn left to contour to the back of Ka'alakei Valley. There are very few native plants on this trail. You get to see one Ohia tree on the KST. Most of the trees are Guava and Pine. There are a few campsites along the way and a field at the start of the trail. Be ready for some heart pumping climbing on Mauna 'Ohi Ridge. There are about 4 rope sections; nothing too difficult. The views are more than beautiful on a clear day. Some spots on the KST afford a 360 view from Diamond Head to Koko Head, to Waimanalo, and Kailua.

Great trail but it’s actually 4.7 miles long and has 1/2 mile section that is straight down on both sides. My wife has a fear of heights and this really got her. The write up says nothing about this section but if anyone has a fear of heights stay away from this trail. We have been on 75+ hikes using AllTrails and they generally are accurately described, but this hike should be listed as hard

if you don't want to slide down the hill by the picnic tables there's another way down. continue the descent from the picnic tables until you get to the sign that shows the way to the KuliououTrail. don't follow it but ascend a small rise and continue in the same direction that you were going. after 10 minutes or so you will intersect the Hahaione Trail on your left. this is the same Trail that you will hit by sliding down the hill just a little further down the valley.
