The Black Rock is a large, black lava outcrop off Kaanapali Beach on the western shore of Maui located on the Maui Sheraton property. Black Rock offers some great snorkeling including Butterfly fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, surgeon fish, moorish idol, tang, wrasse, box fish, cardinal fish, perch, chub, trigger fish, the former Hawaii State Fish Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, goat fish, snapper, porcupine fish, hawk fish, jacks, mackerel, cornet fish, needle fish, turtles, and eagle and manta rays. Many climb up and jump off the rock. The "trail" starts behind the Sheraton on the north side of the rock and follows the cliff edge to the rock. The 3 mile beach walk also offers spectacular sunsets and views. The Sheraton hosts an event at sundown each night where a diver climbs onto the end of Black Rock with a torch. At the appropriate time, the diver tosses his torch into the ocean and then dives in. Ancient Maui residents believed that their spirits "jumped off" and left the world at this rock. Kaanapali Beach, a 3 mile long beautiful white sand beach, is rated one of the best beaches in the world by numerous travel publications. The beach walk runs parallel with the sand the entire length of Kaanapali. Restaurants and shops fill Whaler's Village about half-way down, and some of Maui's best hotels line the shore, including the Sheraton Maui Resort, Kaanapali Shores, Embassy Vacation Resort Kaanapali Beach, The Westin Maui, Kaanapali Beach Resort, and The Hyatt Regency Maui. The snorkeling around Black Rock starts at the beach and gradually gets to about 25 feet or more around the point. Mostly snorkeling over sand but following a underwater lava rock ledge, the visibility is good even in the deeper parts around the point. Watch for turtles that frequent the overhangs along the ledge. The trail, beach walk, snorkeling and show at dusk are NOT TO MISS!

Great snorkeling and rock climbing spot. Black sandy beach is small and the hike is easy. Enter the water for a swim to rock and marvel at the view or snorkel. Hike along the coast is easy, short and great views

Stayed at the Sheraton Maui back in 08' and so Black Rock was right at our door step each day. Jumping off the cliff became my sons daily routine. It's a blast and the local kids come here and do all kinds of crazy flips and jumps off this. Fun for sure. You swim out from the beach and then climb the gnarly rocks to the top. Waters plenty deep for jumping. Don't have to stay at the Sheraton to access this either.

Great for turtles when the water is calm! I thought this would be a horrible spot based on how crowded it was, but it turned out to be some of the best snorkeling I experienced on our trip. The beaches are great too with very few rocks and sandy footings. If you stay in Ka'anapali you have to make the trip.

Unique spot on Maui's northwestern shore at the Maui Sheraton, the Black Rock can be accessed either from the high side (back of the Sheraton on the north side) or the beach. Snorkeling is out of this world, saw three eagle rays in formation off the end. Sunsets are spectacular and the event at dusk is not to miss. Beach is great, rock is great place to reflect especially early in the morning before the crowds. Not to miss if you visit Maui.
