West Overlook Trail is a 0.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Chatsworth, Georgia that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from April until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Fort Mountain State Park charges a $5 parking fee. You can also purchase an annual pass that is valid at all Georgia State Parks for $50. Fort Mountain State Park is filled with horse trails, biking trails, walking trails, camping sites, and a lake. Once you arrive at the park you'll pay the entrance fee and will receive a park map. Start on the West Overlook Trail and come back down the CCC Tower Trail. This is a 1 mile trail great for anyone of all ages. You start off at 2,650 ft. of elevation and gain 200 ft. of elevation during the trail. The West Overlook trail is 0.5 miles long that takes you straight to the overlook. There is a spacious deck to look out over Georgia. Once you are finished at the overlook you will go up some metal stairs that will lead you to the watchtower. (The watchtower may be closed at the time you are visiting but they do allow you to go inside of it.) The watchtower is the start of the CCC Stone Tower trail that will bring you back to the parking lot. Along this trail you will drop 200 ft. of elevation going down a few stone stairs. On your way down you will pass by some of the ruins of a prehistoric rock wall along with a sign giving you some information about the wall. The trail back to the parking lot is also 0.5 miles long.
Its a nice trail that is very easy to walk. Today, there was a lot of snow melt water on the trail, but if you are wearing your hiking boots or shoes, it was not a problem. I have walked this trail numerous times in dry conditions wearing everyday tennis shoes. The overlook is always stunning! I like to go during the week when hardly anyone is out and just sit on the overlook bench enjoying the peacefulness of it all.
Nice hike with a good variation in landscape. Descent elevation changes. Great views. Handful of trees down from the recent storm. 3 stars because I prefer more secluded hikes.
Overlook was absolutely amazing - far surpassed my expectations. A great payoff for a pretty short hike.
