great hike.. even though it was raining all day.. nice well maintained trail

I took Unicoi, Tray Gap, to Tray Mountain and then back to my car at Unicoi and that hike back to my car was tough. I think it's because it's a lot of climbing going and coming back but beautiful views. Trees were very full so I plan to go back in the fall and spring. I think views would be great the entire hike. Really is a tough hike if you do that entire stretch and back.

Hiked this section as part of a longer section out of Neel Gap this past week. Coming up out of Unicoi Gap and climbing Rocky Mtn was tough. It is an elevation gain of 1068’ in a mile and a 1/2 but the switchbacks make it tolerable. There is a flowing creek about .7 mile up be sure to fill up with water because there are no other water sources until you are halfway up Tray Mtn at the old Cheese Factory campsite which is a great place for lunch under the shade of the Rhododendron. The final push up Tray Mtn is long and hard but worth it. The view just before you get to Shelter on the side trail is amazing and has several campsites with a nice 4,193’ view to the southeast. The shelter is alright bit has good usable bear cables and a nice water source past the shelter which was flowing good.

Lots of seasonal views most of the hike. Nice views from Rocky Mountain and the outcrop on Tray.

Hiked from Unicoi to Tray Mountain Shelter January 5-6. You can see Yonah pretty much 100% of the time, we liked to think he was watching us. It's a great trail, and not too hard but hiking back out from the shelter to Unicoi was tougher than I expected -- getting back up Rocky Mountain is a bear. This time of year you get to meet a lot of SouthBounders!

On a thru hike of the GA, AT: Hiked this in freezing rain. Low cloud cover and mist blocked the views most of the way and at the summit. Still had a great time…even better after I got to the shelter and curled up in my sleeping bag!

This one is very tough, but well it. There's no shortage of overlooks or rhododendron tunnels on this stretch of trail. Don't take this one lightly we ended up doing a little over 10 miles with a 3400 ft elevation gain.
